This is just a short article, but I thought it was interesting, and important. LANL has had some security problems over the last few years, and there's enough top-secret research (as well as nasty weapons-grade stuff) there that better protection for the special response team is a must.

And most importantly the labs love to spend money!

OH! Goodie! At $300K a piece! Our 'boys and girls" will be kill proof. This will be a great lesson to that awful Bush and his crowd that invented this stupid idea of worldwide terrorism. Maybe now they can work on a better version of their ill-concieved "Exit Plan".

Whatever happened to the missing nuke designs on zip drives that went missing about a half a year ago and the subsequent lab shutdown?

As a former LANL Protective Force Lt. and SRT officer, I have to say that I'm somewhat ambivalent about this one. In my time there, we had some good gear, some pretty good gear, and some really bad gear.

I hope that this one turns out well. It may seem pricey, but considering what they protect, those guys need the best equipment money can buy. I hope for their sakes, that this is quality gear.

The "security problems" that LANL has had in recent years haven't been caused by "Security" people. They are for the most part very capable and professional. A very small minority of operations and research people are the ones who break the rules and create problems for the rest.

You can have the best security rules, procedures, and policies in the world, but if one person doesn't follow them, and is not held accountable for violating them, it brings the entire system down. LANL has a management problem, not a security problem.
