Not to make light of a serious situation, but how many of these people are driving SUV's and think they are big ATV's that can handle bad weather
Or how many are driving silly little gas sippers which couldn't make it over a speed bump? They're really screwed!
SUV's (Silly Useless Vehicles) (rolls eyes)--->@¿@ That's no place for SUV's. Try military 6x6's & the all-iron, 20-40 year-old 5,000lb.+ REAL 4x4's. Properly equipped, from -45º to 125º, stocked with cold weather supplies in the winter and warm weather supplies in the summer, they're the right tool for the job. I hope the lesson of a similar event in Colorado a few years back has been retained by someone. The Big Rig drivers supplied food from, & shelter in, their rigs for groups of people for up to three days. When all else fails its the anachronists who bring the others in from the cold/floods/disasters. (NOTE: Ex-commercial driver, retired firedude & one who has done MUCH volunteer work for the Red Cross & fire/EMS).
Where I live in New Jersey(yeah, NJ), if you don't have a 4 Wheel drive vehicle there are usually 5-7 days during the Year where front wheel drive cars just won't make it home. Period. 15-25 degree grades with even a light covering of snow becomes impassable without a 4x4, most of which are SUVs.
You really need to get over your SUV hatred, its making you look like an a$$.
"Not to make light of a serious situation, but how many of these people are driving SUV's and think they are big ATV's that can handle bad weather"
More than likely, those in the SUVs would have done just fine if not for all the dinky little motorized skateboards some people think are suitable for transportation. I know the last time I was caught in a bad storm took me a couple of hours to get home. Wasn't bad, just a couple of inches. I was doing just fine in my 4WD until I came to this railroad crossing where the little cars couldn't make it across without being pushed.
One other thing, those people who are stuck are being rescued by folks in big bad 4WD SUVs.
Don't be silly, this was probably caused by a homosexual couple having a domestic violence incident in the lead car.
Most SUV's ought to handle 14 inches of snow without a lot of trouble. The difficulty comes when inexperienced drivers think that four wheel drive shortens their braking distance.
I drove approx. 600,000 miles to and from work in the Adirondack Mtns in NY- in all of those miles- the only cars off the road were SUV's- mostly Jersey plates!!
Don't know what SUV you are driving, but if mine slides off the road, I lock the differentials and drive right out of the snowbank. If the road ices up, I could drive on the median, if need be. While toasting my butt on the seat heaters and listening to the CD changer.
