Wow...needless to say, this is a HUGE storm.
I have seen a foot once here and 11 inches several times...but looking at the sowfall totals one county reported ***16 inches***
For a region without a big snowstorm in years....this has got to be devastating....prayers up that people will get home safely out there in Kentucky.
If you are up north, 16 inches isn't much, but for the central portions of the country, totals like this come once every 10 years, if that.
My word. Keep the photos coming.
That is nasty...I have seen some big ones here in KS...10 inches last year with huge drifts....but 14 inches is much worse.
Carry a good shovel. Some grub and winter clothes, too. It is habitual travel behavior in Interior Alaska. Assume you will have to walk out.
Winter Storm Sets Snowfall Records; 7 Dead
Indiana Governor Declares Emergency
EVANSVILLE, Ind. -- The massive winter storm pounding the nation's midsection has shattered snowfall records, forced emergency plows off the road and collapsed at least one home.
Officials in Illinois say a house crumbled under the weight of the snow. No one was injured.
The weather is setting records from Amarillo, Texas, with nearly 4 inches of snow, to Evansville, Ind., where 19 inches piled up in a single day. The 14 inches on the ground in Paducah, Ky., is twice the previous record.
So far, at least seven deaths are blamed on the storm. Power outages are leaving people shivering from Mississippi to Ohio. Kentucky officials pulled emergency snow crews off the roads Wednesday night, saying conditions were too dangerous.
One weatherman said most folks see just two or three storms like this in their lives.
Indiana's governor has declared a disaster emergency in parts of the state as road crews struggle with massive amounts of snow. Gov. Joe Kernan is urging people to hold off on Christmas travel to give workers time to clear the roads.
In southern Indiana, National Guardsman have been rescuing marooned travelers from autos stuck in deep snow. Abandoned cars, semis and SUVs litter Interstate 64. One Guardsman said some motorists are reluctant to leave their cars on the highway, but added, "You really don't have much of a choice when you run out of gas and you run out of heat."
One motorist said there may be dozens of people still stranded. One driver told The Associated Press that cars were bumper-to-bumper along the stretch of Interstate 64 and not moving.
Helicopters are flying over the Interstate, locating stranded cars and trying to figure out how to get them off the road. The highway is expected to remain closed for most of the day. The Indiana Department of Transportation said the snow was so bad that 20 to 25 snow plows were stuck in the snow in the region.
Meanwhile, officials in Ohio say more than 250,000 customers are without power after ice deposits coated power lines and trees.

I drove approx. 600,000 miles to and from work in the Adirondack Mtns in NY- in all of those miles- the only cars off the road were SUV's- mostly Jersey plates!!
Hey!!! My hero!! What's the weather in Fallujah? Bet you wish you had our little problem with snow! God bless you. Merry Christmas.
Have no idea what it means but I think it applies."
I have no idea either. Mind if I ask where you live?
Anybody hear about I- 90 or I-94 going through Michigan? I may still drive one or the other to get to Buffalo but am not sure.
Woops..the proud aunt..prayers to you. What's the weather there anyway?
West burbs of indy.
Yeah, I'm getting old! The first few hundred shovels full go easy. After that, they get a bit tiresome, especially when they are on the end of my shovel. It's a lever problem.
Ah. How's the weather there?
LOL... Well, Merry Christmas, then!
Ummm... just heard we officially got 20.2 inches! My bad...
I was talking to you, Earthdweller... how's the weather there?
Oh... ok.
