HUNDREDS OF CARS STRANDED ON I-24
NEWS MEDIA IS REPORTING THE NATIONAL GUARD HAS BEEN CALLED OUT.
THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE IN CARS.
ONE STRETCH OF I-24 HAS FORTY MILES OF CARS BACKED UP.
THIS IS THE MAIN ROAD THROUGH THIS ENTIRE REGION.
News Media is having people call in from cars. Serious situation here in Western KY. Temperatures are falling into the lower teens and single digits. They are attempting to get people out.
We have 14 inches of snow. This is the most snowfall ever recorded in Paducah, KY. Drifts are up and over cars.
Never seen anything like this here.
The only transportation for a few days was horses. Birmingham police used them to get to elderly, 4 wheel drives were useless. National guard also helped a ton.
I worked with a guy briefly in the meteorology lab at the U.S. Navy Postgraduate School in Monterey, Ca. back in 1968 and early 1969 who had to take a downgrade from GS-9 to Gs-5 just to get away from Northwestern Territory at an outpost where he feigned mental illness attempting to get someplace warm; he said he got lost in a Whiteout just going to the stash where he kept his booze.
That's only about 60 pounds per section, are you getting old?
A former Air Force Ranger told me that he always kept a few candles in the car; by lighting one at a time he maintained that he could avoid freezing even if the car wouldn't start.
Your pix shows that the quonset outperforms the ridgepole every time.
I am guessing you are referring to Evansville? I just posted some pictures on that thread from Evansville.
I'm headed east on 64 through KY tomorrow...you think it will be possible?
Make that west... directionally challenged.. Thank God for GPS.
69 through Fort Wayne was a MESS this morning...But now, I assume it's pretty good. At least passable. Don't know about heading down to Indy. I know Dayton is getting HAMMERED, so I assume Indy got it too...As well as Louisville. And of course you know what's going on with 24 out of Nashville (I've made this drive many times to Atlanta).
Plus...
It's going to get CRAZY COLD tomorrow and Christmas day...Negative 20 Wind Chills. Which means possible car troubles, and maybe worse...BLACK ICE!
I'd stay home. NO WAY do I head out. I talked to a buddy driving up to Indiana from Dallas this morning and he had just spent 5 hours sitting still and was just approaching Little Rock, going 10 MPH. He should have been in Indianapolis by then based on the time he left Dallas. He's SCREWED!!
Stay home.
Columbus, Indiana not "Equiped"??
It's not THAT far south??
(North Eastern Indiana resident, and former Indy resident here).
I was thinking about the black ice too...
With black ice you simply don't go. We get that here because we are on two rivers. We did not get any of this Ohio Valley snow even though we are in the OV. We got a little bit of rain and yesterday was warm. Today the temp is falling fast. Glad we don't have the moisture to cause ice. For some strange reason we don't get much snow here on the east side of the Ohio River. It snows a lot in Ohio, but it seems to cut off at the river. I can throw a rock across the river from my front porch (If I could throw that far). LOL, a local farmer insists that the reason we don't get the extreme weather is due to the power plants that surround us. I don't know, can't argue with him as we don't seem to get the extreme weather.
I would check with the highway patrol before trying it. Eville was hard hit.
Oh my goodnes...I hope they all get rescued. It's so cold there. Prayers all around for everyone involved.
Yea..I'm thinking no way..need some harsh words for the kids to scare 'em a bit..with it being Christmas and all people are bound to do some stupid things like trying to drive through drifts.
One of these people, a 22 year old soldier on leave from Iraq called in to Rush today. Prayers for Zach.
My son is driving here from Wisconsin in a couple of days. I told him maybe he shouldn't come, things are bad here right now. He said he will keep on eye on the weather. Kids never listen no matter how old they are. They did say on the local news this afternoon that people would probably be leaving late this afternoon to resume their trips.
We had better start praying now for our crazy kids. I know it's Christmas but I would rather celebrate a week late with them then have them leave me early. Everyone..think hard about going out in this mess...even if it is Christmas..
