Only thing I ever came up
with, to explain the water
to wine, was the wine was
only grape juice,
no alcohol in it.

Don't get me wrong, I don't think drinking is evil. After all, as a Roman Catholic, wine is an integral part of our Mass. I just don't understand some other Christian perspectives on this miracle.

I believe that the water into wine story is a parable. The wedding guests accuse the host of serving an older vintage first and then bringing in a newer vintage. The opposite of what was the practice at parties. The old vintage, the separation from God by Jews and man and the new vintage, the Covenant that Jesus brought.

With Jesus being a Jew, and this being a Jewish feast, there is no historical precedent of "grape-juice" being used...ever. Wine was very, very common in Jewish feasts, and Jesus even alludes to wine in several parables.

And, at The Last Supper (Seder) Jesus certainly had wine.

Using that same logic, though, even Jesus' death on the cross could be considered just a parable, as the act is loaded with theological meanings.

Uhhh... yeah. Tourist bait. There is a Nigerian guy on 34th and 7th in Manhattan who sells the same thing, along with umbrellas and velvet images of Elvis.

I've always found it odd that some Christians think that alcohol is evil
I've always wondered about that too, especially since many of the people I've come across who believe alchohol is "evil", also believe the English translation of the Bible should be read literally (no offense to anyone in either of those groups - its just a personal observation).
To: mike182d
IMO it's the abuse of alcohol that is evil. We are given many earthly gifts, alcohol included, that are not to be abused.

Even 2000 years ago, John would have known the difference between Grape Juice and Wine. He wrote what he saw. The Baptists (I am one) drink Grape juice at The Last Supper observance equivalent to RC Communion.....

lol, because when you translate a book from Greek, to Latin, and then to English absolutely none of the meaning gets lost :-)

They're all loaded with theological meanings. That's the genius of them.
