UCC isn't totally welcoming
Boston Globe ^ | 12/20/04 | Jerry L. Pierce

REGARDING THE Dec. 2 front-page article "Two networks bar church ad welcoming gays":

While I feel the TV stations are circumventing the social issue, I do not feel the article should lead one to believe that all United Church of Christ churches embrace the gay and lesbian lifestyle....

The UCC churches in Natick and Wellesley are wholeheartedly welcoming churches. There are some UCC churches, however, that draw a distinct line between acceptance and tolerance. I think of these churches not yet as open and affirming, but rather as ajar and promising. When the minds in the pews meld with the minds of the highest court in the land, the UCC will truly become a wholly welcoming denomination.

A hilarious and revealing lib. letter to the editor in the Boston Globe. Love the last line: forget Christ and the Gospels, we know where the true source of all moral and religious authority lies, the Supreme Court!

I think most churches are tolerant. I cannot imagine a pastor criticizing gay members by name publicly. They don't accept the sin, but they accept the persons.

Thanks for bringing to our attention the last line, Unam Sanctam. If I hadn't read it for myself I wouldn't have believed it.

Yes - hate the sin, love the sinner. Tolerance is both good and acceptable, but acceptance would be actually embracing what the Bible calls sin. Only apostate "churches" could do this.

And if the sick people complain and say bad things about these churches that delineate between good and evil, as laid out in the Bible:

Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
Jesus in Matthew 5:11-12 (NIV)

It's no longer a "church of Christ" when they reject the word of Christ in favor of collection plate revenue.

"This people honors me only with lip-service, while their hearts are far from me. The worship they offer me is worthless; the doctrines they teach are only human regulations." (Matt.15:8-9).

They aren't fooling God.

Actually , UCC churches do have the freedom to run pretty much as the locals see fit.

The donomination is very big on pushing the "Justice and Peace issues" and spends heavily on them.

A lot of small town UCC churches are are still conserative .

nope , I'm a member in a smalltown UCC church. We get the lefty bilge sent to us ,but they never actually force it down our throats.

Now a decent sized chunk of missions cash sent in is moved to political projects.

But by and large, the bigwigs leave us alone to do our thing.

the Congational(sp)Church or the pilgram church joined with another in 56 or so. We're not hooked up In Biblical Witness. However we don't go along with the Socalist agenda either. I hope you and all the freepers have a merry Christmas and a Blessed new Year.
