The major death camps were located in Poland, which was in Soviet occupied territory. General Patton did up up with the idea that German's should be shown (and transported if need be) to the local concentration camps.
Following a report of a German mayor and his wife hanging themselves after such a viewing, Patton stated there was hope for the German people.

How could Patton and Eisenhower tour a concentration camp in Soviet-held territory? Answer, there were a number of concentration camps in the western section of Germany, along with the various slave labor factories (some used by Ford Motor Company of Europe).
The mayor, his wife, and the whole population of the German town toured the concentration camp. The mayor killed his wife and himself when they returned home (knowing their own fate was sealed during retribution?). Townspeople knew of the odd odors and the trains that passed through.
But then you had examples of Jews never reaching concentration camps because they were summarily killed in France, Italy, Russia, elsewhere or used as human guinea pigs for medical experimentation.
