HIP-HOP FLOPS
New York Post ^ | 12/14/04 | SUZANNE KAPNER

A shakeout is afoot in the world of urban apparel, as sales of once red-hot labels begin to cool, analysts and industry executives said.

The across-the-board slowdown is alarming some of the major department-store retailers that had allocated a growing amount of space to these brands on the belief that the double-digit sales growth of recent years would continue, sources said.

Federated Department Stores, which operates the Macy's and Bloomingdale's chains, for instance, is seeing recent sales of urban brands decline in the double digits, compared with year-ago levels, said one person, who added: "It has everyone worried."

Meanwhile, demand for the oversized jerseys and baggy jeans that these lines were known for dwindled, as classic looks regained popularity.

[snip]

"What we had at retail," admits Ullmann, Phat Fashion's president, "was too urban."

"Yep I said every word. Look at the results, now you can go to NYC and actually not worry about being mugged or killed and Giuliani is the reason. You notice you bitter old man that no one really cares. That the result speaks for themselves."

Wow. You really should think about some of the things you say before you post them here on FreeRepublic. It's not like you can go back and edit this stuff. Thanks for the quote.

That one is a classic, Mike. One would almost guess that you voted for Clinton.

Nope. I can blame people like you for the 8 years of billy bob...I was too young to vote against him either time....

Cut you a deal, you pay for me to get some jeans that actually fit that are not Levi's and I will wear those. Otherwise, get off of the subject. YOu can't gaurantee that something you have bought ISN'T from a communist, bomb-thrower supporting company. Your AK-47s were invented by a Soviet for pete's sake!!!

I am pretty sure that computer you are using (whether it be an Mac or a PC) has some parts in it from Apple or IBM, which would preclude you from being on this forum. Nevermind that the CISCO routers used to route your traffic to FR from where ever in Neverland your cave is also supports the Democrats.

Oh well, back to selling hot dogs....I am running a special today, 2 grabbed guns for the price of one hotdog....

Wasn't Levi Straus a man? Probably a conservative one at that. But he is dead now and the company only bears his name. Levi's are the best jeans and I will wear them.

Maybe I will shoplift mine to keep from giving them money.

I will continue to boycott boycotts.

LOL

Levi Straus was Jewish wasn't he? Not only that, but he made his company from the ground up. I also seem to remember that he was an immigrant. Isn't that a pretty good American story?

Guess not....wow I am such a communist heathen....

You have to really keep and eye on the extreme right and the extreme left. The only difference is religion and guns.

Polo likes to make a big deal over P. Diddy (or whatever he goes by now)shopping at their boutiques and wearing Ralph Lauren designed clothes at major events like the Grammy awards. What makes this funny is that his name is on Sean John urban wear (Sean Combs).
On another note, it really doesn't make sense for upscale retailers to devote precious floor space to urban wear. The quality is not very good, especially for the prices involved. The high price also leads to higher shoplifting rates because the customer base is generally poorer and less respectful of the law than the customer base for other designers such as Polo and Tommy Hilfiger. You also have a higher rate of returns when people buy an outfit, wear it out one time, and then bring it back. The bottom line is that retailers either have to mark it down to clearance prices in order to sell it or they end up taking a loss due to theft or damage from use or poor workmanship.

I am 26 and I am more of a GQ kinda guy (at least without the rabid left wing politics) I dont go for the "just rolled outta bed and raided the hamper look" I like to present myself with a little class. But then again I am a republican so I guess i dont count

The baggy hip-hop fashions look bad enough on teenagers, but I swear by Gawd there's nothing more pathetic than seeing some paunchy, mid-thirties black dude dressed that way. You don't know whether to laugh or cry. The clothes are bad enough but the ridiculous, menacing, anti-social ghetto attitude that they all to often put on along with them is worse. Suffice to say, it's not a combination that makes for success in life.

I always ask myself when buying: "Does this look too trendy?" "Will it look silly in five years?" I always believed a slavish adherence too fashion bespoke a weakness of character. Then again, I was never the crowd-chaser.

The saddest part of my recent trip to London was the same Eminem/baggy/gangsta style of the youth. And the graffiti, which is now worse than New York's, if you can believe it.

Since everything I have read in recent years indicates Merrie England is going the way of Stanley Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange I guess it would only be an aesthetic improvement if the punks started dressing like Little Alex and his droogies.
