HIP-HOP FLOPS
New York Post ^ | 12/14/04 | SUZANNE KAPNER

A shakeout is afoot in the world of urban apparel, as sales of once red-hot labels begin to cool, analysts and industry executives said.

The across-the-board slowdown is alarming some of the major department-store retailers that had allocated a growing amount of space to these brands on the belief that the double-digit sales growth of recent years would continue, sources said.

Federated Department Stores, which operates the Macy's and Bloomingdale's chains, for instance, is seeing recent sales of urban brands decline in the double digits, compared with year-ago levels, said one person, who added: "It has everyone worried."

Meanwhile, demand for the oversized jerseys and baggy jeans that these lines were known for dwindled, as classic looks regained popularity.

"What we had at retail," admits Ullmann, Phat Fashion's president, "was too urban."

There hasn't been a decent rap act since The mid-90's, when the once-legendary Bestie Boys went p___y P.C. and Cypress Hill put out their last great "joint" (Black Sunday).

The genre is dead. Eminem may have tried to resuscitate the patient, but with the sour, sub-Public Enemy idiocy of "Mosh" replacing the fiery murder-balladier of "Kim" and "Way I Am", even that promise seems finished.

Tip your Derby to DMC and turn out the lights, boyz.
The party is over.

They do not hold up to the acid, lime and the other ingredients in mortar mix as well as Levi's do. The only other brand that I buy is Carhartt.

Interesting. I work in the cement industry. We mine all the raw materials and make that grey powdery stuff called cement (along with differnt tpyes of mortar) and you'll be hard pressed to find a pair of Levi's out here.

When you do they are being worn by

1.) One of the girls payroll or

2.) Somebody from the home office down in Phoenix.

For those who get down and dirty it's either Carhart's or, most commonly, Wrangler's.

Jordache is the devil!!!

I remember a professional sport called hockey. Members of the Rangers were dancing around the ice,
singing ooh la la Sassoon. Circa 1979.

I wonder what happened to that sport. It was only last spring that WABC would bump Drudge on Sunday
nights, for the NJ Devils. /sarcasm

RE: "No....you're supposed to wear Levis....just like a good gun-grabbing un-American leftist. If you wore Wranglers somebody might mistake you for a Conservative."

Well, maybe he (and I) just wear Levi's because they are a nicely-fitting, good looking, always groovy brand of blue jeans...and an American tradition at that.

I also eat Heinz ketchup and watch Oliver Stone movies.
Sue me.

FReerepublic or no, not everything is a "political consideration", and mind-numbing boycott-bots like you need to get a life outside of the voting booth. What the Hell do we want to protect American culture for, if we're just going to turn on fine American products that do their intended jobs just as soon as some Left-wing CEO or idiot nephew gets his hands on the company?

I know from my experience that Levi's have held up better than Wrangler jeans. Carhartt are the absolute best though.

I'm a minor "casualty" of the decline of hip hop apparel.

I have a sports apparel store and "throwbacks" were huge last year. This year none.

Fortunately, I still enjoy wearing an authentic Marshall Faulk (San Diego State) jersey, now and again...it's signed.

I noticed you didn't deny that you were Pro Gun-Control. Smart move, as you know I have your quotes from that Giulliani thread where you praise Bill Clinton's Gun-Control policies.

"I wonder what Jim Robinson thinks about him throwing his name around so carelessly."

If you think Mr. Robinson would object to my referencing his mission statement, why don't you ping him to this thread?

Ya....you IT contractors are the elite of the elite. I'm not the one who was misleading folks about military service in Iraq.
