When I first joined posters were very funny, very knowledgeable, we were always obligated to reference valid news articles, and we seemed to relate to each other in the sense that we poked holes in leftist articles, we wanted Clinton out, and we supported President Bush. Now I find myself offended by numerous posters who reference their own hysterical blogs, make emotional and opinionated assertions against immigrants as well as President Bush. Then these newbies attack me personally when I don't agree. It has become hostile. I still love the real articles.

I have seen valid disagreements degenerate into name-calling between individual posters on the same thread. I just don't see the level that you implied in your original post.

and screw the newbies, if they don't show the proper respect.

Although, I probably broke a rule when I posted my first article after three days of membership.

I was allowed to remain because I already knew the proper etiquette.

Rants from newbies are not tolerated, especially if they run counter to the stated purpose of FreeRepublic.

I found FR in 1998 and my observation is that FR was MUCH more personally hostile when blubba and his WINO were terrorizing America, and that it is vastly more civil around here since W's first election.

Blog-referencing, well, blogs are a new thing but FReepers have always touted their own web sites outside of FR.

Also, I still see people having to cite their sources or be called on the carpet, with their assertions negated.
