I knew something was rigged when I heard the question...whole thing looked fishy to me

I tend to go easy on SoD, he is only human and war is a serries of mistakes. I did get down on DoD over the first battle of Fallujah. I tend to think that DoD miscalulated the problem of occupying Iraq, but I am hoping I am wrong about that.
But attacking this soldier and the thousands that cheered his "question" is just pisses me off. The draft dodging Rush Limbaub should be the last person in the world to open his sorry mouth. I thought Rumsfield's answer was good, and I did not see anything wrong with the trooper bringing to Rumsfields attention that a little armor would be nice to have.

I think the media got it right this time. If this light shined on this issue can help bring help to our troops...then bravo.
To: LincolnLover
If you've read my posts on this subject, I did not criticize the question. I complained (since yesterday--before this reporter revelation and before I was graced with any input from Rush, making your dittohead charge inapplicable to me) about the mischaracterization of Rumsfeld's answer.
It was reported in order to sow seeds of discord between the Pentagon and the troops.
You may not be bothered by this. I am.

You drama queens and your "roars of cheers" and "outbursts of hoots and hollars" need to give it a rest.
If my Sunday paper is late sometimes. It bugs me, but its only once or twice a month, and I might call up the Paper and complain someday, but I haven't yet. Then a reporter comes to the door and wants to do stories on the Paper delivery service in the area. He sets me up with a speech at the city council where I get to address and ask the Paperboy why my paper is late. After I do, there is a few days of big news stories talking about how mad I was that I went to the city council and go up and addressed directly the paper boy and the big DEAL that was.
Now... in each case the situaion is the same, but the REPORTER has the ability to SKEW REALITY by engineering the whole thing.
Does it mean my paper is not really late? Does it mean that I have no right to complain about it being late?
Of course not... but thats not the issue (and not my point)... what I said is DISGUSING is the distortion of REALITY. To 'crank up' the percieved level of 'angst' in the military.
"Its so bad even the soldiers are publically dissing Rumsfield!" is the perception this guy tries to create even though its more accurate to say soldiers HAVE been asking for armor for quite a while, but things are "so bad" that they would get to public airing of greviences.
Why is it so difficult for you to understand that there is a difference between the complaint and how the complaint is made (and the role in the Reporter in that process)

Another fitting Patton quote:
"A good solution applied with vigor now is better than a perfect solution applied ten minutes later."
To: Palladin
Rumsfeld didn't cause this problem, I will admit it is his to fix now, but he is not the reason that Humvees are not armored. With 20/20 hindsight, these Humvees should have had different design criteria - but I believe on another thread, some says the initial plans for these vehicles goes back many years (before Clinton). And certainly nothing was done during the Clinton administration to up-armor them.
Why should Rumsfeld resign over this? Why reward the left for this setup?

Shame on free republic for ignoring a real issue and problem. The biggest problem here is the MSM exposed a weakness to the enemy and the SOBs are celebrating it. If that isn't a real issue then what is.

"who are risking their lives every day, while you and I sit at our computers." My take is these guys are in a staging area and haven't even seen battle yet. They are also, I believe, National Guard and reserve troops vs reg armed forces and quite possibly this kid represents the 'whiner contingent' of those called up who never thought they would.

The trolls are one thing, we've come to expect their foolishness. It's the outlandish whining and arm-tugging from the usual suspects that becomes so annoying.
We are to now have a new found devotion to and trust of the MSM donchaknow? It's a miracle.

I'll have to read the thread but even without reading it, a few names spring to mind.
As to any freeper who has any trust whatsoever of the MSM, for shame!

what we need now is some PR on this - fly Rumsfeld, perhaps even Bush, to the assembly plant making these armored upgrades.
To: CheneyChick
So what? The lack of up armored humvees is still an issue Uh-uh. Don't let them get you off track. There are hundreds of 'issues.' The point is that a reporter set up soldier so that a story slanted just his way would be created.

There is a supply choke point due to limited manufacturing resources. That reminds me of something I heard on the House or Senate floor once. I think we only have ONE steel plant that is able to produce the steel needed for the armor

To a lot of FReepers, only Delta Force are real soldiers. National Guardsmen certainly aren't.
