Accusing the Republican Party and business groups of stoking "anti-immigrant, anti-Latino" fervor, the Legislature's Democratic Latino Caucus on Tuesday urged Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger to denounce "racist" GOP campaign ads mailed during recent Assembly races.
Members of the 27-member caucus also called on the Republican governor to speak out against a campaign to qualify a ballot measure that would deny benefits - including driver's licenses - to illegal immigrants.
"I would hope that the governor will make a response to these (campaign) tactics," said state Sen. Martha Escutia, D-Whittier, the new chairwoman of the caucus. Escutia invoked the memory of Proposition 187, which she contends inflamed ethnic divisions in California and drove voters away from the Republican Party.
Schwarzenegger supported the 1994 ballot measure, which was overwhelmingly approved by voters but gutted by legal challenges.
The governor has dismissed the new measure as "old hat" and cautioned that "we should find ways to work together rather than to find ways of going the other way." Caucus members said he should raise his voice.
The mailers criticized by Latino legislators were sent out during the final days of the recent election campaign by JobsPAC, formed by the California Chamber of Commerce and the California Manufacturers Association, and the state Republican Party.

Just because a criminal is of a different race than you doesn't mean it's racist to point that out. Is it sexist for a woman to say that Michael Moore is a fata$$ liberal moron because he happens to be (reportedly) a male?? Or is it truth?
The problem in Caleefornya is not with illegal Austrian immigrants.
You would think the legal immigrants in the country wouldn't put up with this. It would only be racist if people were against immigrants because of their race. They are against ILLIGAL immigrants not legal ones.
The operative word in the article is "ILLEGAL". No one has any issues with the "LEGAL" Aliens. Most of us in this country (except "NATIVE" Americans) are "LEGAL" Aliens.
ILLIGAL = ILLEGAL oops.
If it's racist to disparage a criminal body because most of those who belong to that criminal body are of a certain race, then I posit that it is racist to call these ads racist, because most of the Americans that really give a hoot are white. We need to stop sitting by and letting everyone be so racist against the white people...let's start by suing them for this bigotry.
I am not sure where I saw this, but LEGAL AMERICANS of Latino Heritage are very much in favor of stricter immigration laws and enforcement...
Hispanics do not represent a special race; maybe we need a new term like culturalism or fedupism.
What I can't understand is why everyone is so worried about what some @$$hole liberal will call them. If one of these idiots wants to call me a racist, SO WHAT? I could care less what some career poltician, media twerp, member of academia or even fellow FReeper calls me. The fact of the matter is that ILLEGAL immigrants are criminals, plain and simple.
I don't care if they are Mexican, Honduran, Middle Eastern, Irish, Nigerian, Haitian or Outer Mongolian. If they're illegal, they're CRIMINALS.
I think it's time for me to have tagline.
bump
The GOP's response should ask the Latino Caucus to prove it's racist implication that all illegals are hispanic, or STHU.

"What I can't understand is why everyone is so worried about what some @$$hole liberal will call them."
If half the people don't hate my guts I take a good look at myself and see what i'm doing wrongs.
Being called racist by those scum is a badge of honor!
Of course it is not racism. This country doesn't need more terrorists, drug dealiers, pedophiles, welfare cheats and other criminals. The Russian Mafia and the MS-13 nationwide gang network (started by Marxist El Salvedorians) are powerful enough to cause great damage to this country.
And the Caucasian Caucus responded how....?
Oh wait, that's right...there is a Black Caucus, an Asian-Pacific Islander Caucus, and a Latino Caucus.
But it's the white people who are the racists. Right. Got it.
Imagine what would be said if there was a "Caucasian Caucus". Now someone tell me why the same thing doesn't happen to these groups.
Latino Caucus = Racism in and of itself.
Cat calling the kettle black ping.

Charges like these are printed in the SacBee, but as far as I know they never covered this story:

"California legislators ask Mexican Senate to intervene [in driver's licenses for illegal aliens]"
Please send an email to ombud@sacbee.com asking why not.

"Prop. 187 was heavily supported by Latinos, 52 percent to 42 percent two months before the vote. But 77 percent of Latinos voted against it."
