EL CAMPO - The funeral for Maude Conic was actually reunion of an extended family of people related either by blood or the simple fact they had met and been "adopted" by the woman they all considered a remarkable woman who lived her life according to her strong faith in God.
"She lived the life she sung about in hymns and read about in the Bible," Vanessa Frier said. "She was an example to all of us and left a great legacy."
Conic died Sunday at the age of 116 and held the unofficial status of being the oldest living American.
But because there is not an official record of Conic's birth date, she was never officially given the title.
Her funeral was Friday at the Mount Olive Baptist Church in El Campo.
Determining the exact relationship between Frier and Conic is as difficult as it is to define most of her relations.
After Conic's children and niece died, she raised her niece's four sons and daughter as her own. There is also an extended family of nieces, nephews and cousins along with friends who she simply "adopted" along the way. At Conic's insistence, she simply became "Auntie" Maude and cared for them with equal amounts of consideration.

Now that she's dead, she will start voting Democrat.
Now that she's dead, she'll start showing up on voter rolls as a Democrat.
We need to recruit a Dem to take her place. God rest her soul.
I hear if you live long enough, you'll become a republican.
Another smoking related death, I would bet.
The article clearly spells it out: devotion and faith can help extend one's life. Studies have shown it, and she's living (well, not so living now...) proof. And, she probably ate her Wheaties.
Some whack jobs claim just about every person who dies does so because of something smoking related, even someone 116 years old.
Just a week or two ago, the oldest American died at the age of 115. Where was this lady hiding? I think there should be an investigation!
Did they manage to save the baby?!
And now she is in her Savior's arms
Thanks for hanging in there long enough to vote for Bush, Auntie!
Thank God she didn't live in a battleground state.
"An ardent George W. Bush supporter, Ms. Conic asked a friend in 2000 to help her make sure she was registered to vote so she could support the former Texas Governor in the presidential election. Today, she says she is very proud of President Bush. I think George W. Bush is doing a great job, she says."
If she was a Republican in Texas before 1968 she was one of about fifteen in the whole state. Yes, quite a woman who obviously led quite a life.
God Bless this lady. Amazing what she has seen.
I have noticed these past few weeks there have been several "oldest" Americans pass and they are of varying ages. I realize a hundred years ago birth records probably weren't the most precise.
Wait a minute. If you read the whole article, you see the REAL Secret to long life: Fritos and coffee! Definitely up my alley. They'll be burying me with my coffee cup in hand. More power to her.
