Sometimes, I think the "let's be friends" line is like a last test. The lady is waiting to see if the man wants her badly enough to kick it aside and sweep her off her feet despite her silly hesitations.

You mean the John Wayne, sweep her off her feet approach? If she has already shot you down most men that consider themselves gentlemen will back off and respect her opinion. I want a woman whose word I can believe and whose opinion I can respect. If she says 'no' then that is it. I would consider the sweep her off her feet anyway' to be disrespect. I admit it looks cool in the movies but I don't think I could do that. And I am not sure I want a woman that makes me jump through hoops. Am I getting old and crotchety yet? Maybe so...
