The White House declined to express confidence on Wednesday in Kofi Annan's leadership as United Nations secretary general, on the day that a top Republican senator called on him to resign.
A senior White House official, asked whether Washington maintained its confidence in Mr Annan, would only refer to remarks made this week by John Danforth, the US ambassador to the UN. Mr Danforth had said: I don't think that the US government rushes to judgment before all the facts are in.
The lack of explicit endorsement fell far short of statements of support earlier this year when Mr Annan and his officials helped choose members of a sovereign Iraqi administration.
In recent weeks Republican legislators and rightwing media commentators have mounted a virulent attack on the UN's position on the war in Iraq and its alleged mismanagement of the multibillion-dollar oil-for-food programme.

2. The whole UN is corrupt and only gives legitimacy to anti-American nations, allowing them to band together against us.
3. Note the supposedly unbiased, highly regarded Financial Times reporting in the last paragraph of the excerpt "rightwing media commentators have mounted a virulent attack on the UN's position on the war in Iraq and its alleged mismanagement of the multibillion-dollar oil-for-food programme." -- the problem is NOT the "right wing commentators", the problem is the CORRUPT UN.
Some Rs are trying to pass a bill to withold funding to the UN :) i pray that this is the begining of a massive dismantling of the UN
You'll see bills in the House to cut the US contibution to the UN, AND also to refuse the $2 billion "loan" to the UN for their new building..KOfi is stiffing the House committee..and the House will NOT stand for it..He's made a big mistake..he doesn't understand that the House controls the $$
WHO IS THIS GUY, and how did he become Sec Gen? What could be so threatening that the U.S. wimps out at the thought confronting the massive oil-for-food corruption?
What am I missing?

FYI, the Financial Times is now a part of the NY Times or one of the British fishwrappers.
I predict that he does resign. I also predict that Bill Clinton is nominated to replace him as UN Secretary General, and the world will enthusiastically endorse Clinton's elevation.
Biblical end times, here we come ...
What would you do with the UN?
I think the UN should be dealt with in the spirit immortalized in the words of former UN Ambassador Jeanne Kirkpatrick's deputy Charles Lichenstein. Shortly after the Soviets shot down KAL 007, murdering all those people, legislatures in New York and New Jersey denied Soviet aircraft landing rights. Some at the UN raised the question of whether that body should remove from the United States. And Lichenstein, fed up and in no mood for 'diplomacy', said, 'We will put no impediment in your way. The members of the US mission to the United Nations will be down at the dockside waving you a fond farewell as you sail off into the sunset.'
I love it.
Keep an eye on Jay Rockefeller. When he starts to go ballistic over this issue, it will be an indication that the UN is really starting to feel the heat.

The Rockefellers offer the United Nations a tract of land on their Pocantico estate as a site for its headquarters. When that plan falls through, Nelson persuades John D. Rockefeller Jr. to purchase land on New York City's East River and donate it to the United Nations.

ROCKEFELLER, John Davison IV (Jay), (nephew of Nelson Aldrich Rockefeller, great-grandson of Nelson Aldrich, and son-in-law of Charles Harting Percy), a Senator from West Virginia; born in New York City, June 18, 1937; graduated, Phillips Academy, Exeter, N.H., 1954; graduated, Harvard University 1961; VISTA volunteer, Emmons, W. Va., 1964-1966; member, West Virginia house of delegates 1966-1968; secretary of State of West Virginia 1968-1972; president, West Virginia Wesleyan College 1973-1976; Governor of West Virginia 1977-1985; elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate in 1984 and reelected in 1990, 1996 and 2002 for the term ending January 3, 2009; chair, Committee on Veterans Affairs (One Hundred Third Congress, One Hundred Seventh Congress [January 3-20, 2001; June 6, 2001-January 3, 2003]); vice-chair, Select Committee on Intelligence (One Hundred Eighth Congress).
There is no way on earth that the UN member nations will EVER agree to elect an American as Secretary General. Not even Bill Clinton, who managed to persuade people that he was "the first black president" and no doubt would tell the UN that he would be their first third-world Secretary General.
The nations of the world already think that the U.S. is too strong. To give them control of the UN administration as well would be simply inconceivable. As it is, U.S. citizens play a disproportionately small role in the paid U.N. bureaucracy.
As I've said before, it's similar to the rule that an American will never become Pope. The U.S. already controls an inordinate share of money, power, and influence in the Church. The Cardinals from other nations would never agree to let an American, no matter how qualified, take that office. If that is true, than it is much more true of the UN, where the organization is far more riddled with greed, corruption, and jealousy than the Church has ever been in its worst times.
No wonder they were trying their best to prevent the U.S. from taking out Saddam. They were all on his payroll. Then they were pretty mad with GWB for cutting the gravy train, so they did their best to prevent his re-election.
Guillermo expresses NO CONFIDENCE in the United Nations.
Talking about getting rid of Annan is a waste of time. The US should get out of the UN and start another form of international democracies. Real ones that aren't on the dole of thugs.
Kofi Annan is nothing...it's the entire organization that needs to be replaced.
No one from one the permanent UN member nations on the Security Council can serve as Secretary General.
Interesting point -- but I would never put it past Clinton to somehow deny his fidelity to his country in order to achieve the only post on earth that sounds stronger than President. There is also no one else on earth who comes close to fulfilling the requirements for the "Father of all lies." We'll see.
