The scary part of it is, if it were to come about, where would the politicians go when they badly need a cash flow for their pork without SS available to dip into?

I've been waiting 20 years for somebody, anybody, to take a look at the civil service retirements in some parts of Galveston county. Waaaay back the gubmint workers were allowed to opt out of the system they were in and not switch to Social Security. It sounds pretty much like the Chilean formula. They all started to retire early and rich!

Several time in the passing years SS reform has come up, but you know it's political death. I wrote to newspapers and TV stations to check on it in Texas. I only saw one report on CBS many years ago, and NOBODY would go back to the old system that was interviewed. If I remember right it was Webster TX? I am pretty sure it was in Galveston county.

All you have to do is go to a bank and pick up a 401K brochure and it will show the difference between saving yourself and waiting on the gubmint. You can retire with millions instead of Alpo money.

The world's only functioning (immensely successful at that) social security privatization plan is in Chile-- and the nation's retiree's are both healthier and more prosperous than their counterparts in Latin America because of it.

Just Another reason (one of many) for Chile to be thankful for Gen. Augusto Pinochet.

Is Chile the South American country that instituted a flat tax?

Workers may choose any one of several competing private pension fund companies to manage their accounts.

The dems have distorted this to mean "Bushes Wall St. cronies will make a fortune off of this plan".

And too many fools will fall for it.

For 4 years, most of them with not a lot of jobs, the Repubs and what's left of the dem-o-crats did nothing to reduce the 13% employment tax code-named 'Social Security'.

I'd really like to see some action this term, but I'm not holding my breath.
