Jurors face difficult decision over Scott Peterson's fate

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — If the experience of those involved in past death penalty cases is any guide, the jurors in Scott Peterson's murder trial will have to grapple with raw and deep religious, moral and legal issues as they decide whether he lives or dies.

Arguments in the penalty phase are scheduled to begin Tuesday, but experts say many of the jurors may already have made up their minds about what punishment the 32-year-old former fertilizer salesman deserves.

In 2001, a California jury faced a case that holds some similarities to the Peterson trial. Todd Garton was a philandering husband convicted of the shocking murder of his young and very pregnant wife. Jurors said he deserved to die.

"I signed the document that the jury found for death and I think about that a lot," said Fred Castagna, who served as jury foreman. "It was emotional during deliberations, but I don't lose sleep over it."

The author of that thread seems to think that if it's a coroner that makes a determination of death, it's irrelevant, because it's a "political" position. What a hoot. The coroner is authorized to make legally defensible determinations about unattended deaths. In the case of laci, the county coroner determined that the cause of death was homicide. But, that apparently isn't good enough, because the coroner isn't an ME. What a steaming pile.

Didn't Geragos have a second autopsy done, or at least have some of his own "experts" there?

I don't recall about the autopsy, but Geragos did have his own "expert" there about the possible date of death of Connor, and the jury about laughed him out of court.

Anyone taking bets on what they're going to do? My guess: if they believed he killed his wife and child and convicted him of first degree murder then no penalty less than death is deserved. According to the law that's exactly what it's for and what he should get.

I don't think Jackie was calling ME a misinformed troll - I think she was referring to the dude who posted the thread I linked to. I think.

I think I'm done with that other thread. I tire of arguing with a brick wall. You, however, appear to still be having a good time.

Well, here's what it answered to me: "If your demonstrated skill is writing unsupported personal attacks, you have a future as a Democratic Party operative."

What a hoot. I supported what I said. He didn't. Simply made assertions.

You deal is simplicities. Your arguments transcend logic and the law. I won't wish you luck in your attempt to peddle your "book."

Okay, this is both a personal smear and completely irrelevant to proving your case.

You have all the qualifications to have been on the prosecution team in the trial of Scott Peterson.

LOL!LOL!LOL!

OK. I lied. Maybe I wasn't entirely done with that thread. I just HAD to make one last post. Hey. Maybe I'll get reported to the mods for making "personal attacks". I think it would be my first.

It's really amusing because the poster is so totally full of himself.

Unbelievable that I have never crossed paths with him before.

I've never run into him before, either. I'm feeling a tad guilty about talking about him without pinging him this thread. Just a tad. Lots of statements without any support, lots of ego. Anyway, I think I'll head off to bed. I'm tired and headachy. I didn't sleep well last night, and need to get some rest. It's been a hoot, we'll see what transpires tomorrow!

I just checked back over there, and our friend made a comment to Howlin referencing the biblical statement about Pearls - you know. Oh, man. As if that article was full of gems. LOL!
