I don't know what a blue star signifies.

During WW2, Families of active duty military would make a banner( a large white square, red border and blue star in the middle), and hang it in their front window so that everyone would know that there was a person from that household that was fighting for our freedom. I a gold star was put over the blue one, that meant that the service person had been killed. Some banners had as many as five gold stars. One of our boys is an officer on an Air Craft Carrier and is reasonably safe, but when they pull into an overseas port, the officers spend their time on shore duty, and it can get tricky, because of the hatred that some countries have for us. BTW my Husband experienced the same treatment during the cold war, so this hatred is nothing new.
