This wouldn't be the first time that Powell spoke out and made statements expressing opinions, which were not shared by the rest of the administration, including Bush, so I take anything Powell said with at least several ounces of salt.

Because he won't have to deal with what comes next, Dr. Rice will.

Just to inform you: ALL 25 EU-foreign ministers have called the Ukrainian ambassador in for heavy criticism due to the elections. The US and EU both do not accept the election results.

Powell isn't speaking of his own personal opinion in this instance. He is formally declaring the official position of the administration.

Your approach is about propaganda.

Of course neither candidate is any good. They're both "ex-communists." That's why we must choose the lesser of two evils.

George Soros may be evil, but does he have a nuclear arsenal and one of the world's largest armed forces? Is he trying to help the Iranians get nukes? Is he offering security guarantees to North Korea? Did he help the Iraqi's fight us and hide Saddam's WMD?

No, Russia did all those things.

Ukraine has always been "caught in the middle" throughout history. I wonder what Bush's wants from all this. For the most part, he has the world on his side except for Russia, half of Ukraine, Belarus, North Korea, China and the Muzzie states.

So Yanukovich's violent criminal past is just "propaganda"?

It is important. When the Iron Curtain fell, the communist hard-liners who ran the Ukraine under the USSR stayed in charge, to the despair of the Ukrainians. Yushchenko is a pro-Western, pro-Ukrainian nationalist candidate. The other one, the one Putin is backing, is a pro-Moscow, more hard-liner candidate, along the same lines as the people who stayed in charge from the old USSR days.

Under the pro-Moscow government, in the last 12 years, freedom of the press was repressed, reporters who dared to publish anything critical of the govt or exposing corruption or communist ties went missing. The Ukrainians want Yushchenko because he is a vote for reform, for the West, for more liberty, for more opportunity. A vote for Putin's boy is a vote for strengthening and hardening central govt control as a Moscow satelite rather than a truly sovereign nation.

We should care because Ukraine under a pro-Western govt will be an ally to the US like Poland; under a pro-Putin govt, it will be someone echoing the Putin-schroeder-chirac line. Also Ukraine acts as a buffer between Europe and Russia, and the Islamic world. They would be a strategic ally in the war on terror. To have them on our side would be a big plus.

We should also care, because the Ukrainians, like the Poles, like the Romanians and so many other Eastern Europeans, suffered under Soviet and Russian rule, and have been groaning for this freedom for many decades. This is why the Ukrainians care so darn much. This is for the Ukraine, what Lech Walesa was for Poland, or the revolt against Milosovic was for Serbia. Truly. It is a repudiation of corruption, of communism, of servitude.

We have been to the Ukraine several times, and have friends there, and know many immigrants here. The people are wonderful and deserve better. They love America, most of them. They share many cultural and ideological similarities with the US. I hope they succeed; this is very important.

I am delighted to hear that we are not going to silently accept the reformation of the soviet union. I did not know if Bush would let this go or not. The same damm thing happened in Poland.

Putin must be deposed along with the russian mafia and the rest of the corrupt politicians that make up the russian landscape.

I was right. It seems Powell must have been chastized by the White House for running off at the mouth, as usual, because here is the LATEST:

US says not look for contest with Russia over Ukraine poll result
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1287789/posts

Outgoing US Secretary of State Colin Powell said on Wednesday that the United Stated did not lookfor a contest with Russia over the poll result of Ukraine.

Powell said he had a "good" conversation with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and both the United States and Russia are interested in finding a solution to the Ukrainian crisis.

"What we are trying to do now is to use diplomacy and use political actions to resolve this. We are not looking for a contest with the Russians over this," Powell said.

Powell did not go into any specifics of any possible solution to the Ukrainian election crisis.

"One suggestion that has been made is another election, but there are other suggestions out there. This is the time for all alternatives to be examined carefully, to be examined in light of the law. And hopefully the parties, acting reasonably and doing everything to avoid any use of force, can find a way forward," Powell said.

And your suggestion is...??? Nuke Russia?

Soros merely tried to destroy the US by bankrolling Kerry, who would have destroyed the US from the inside.

What is your suggestion? If you can't beat 'em join 'em? I'm glad Ronald Reagan didn't think that way.

#ONE THING AGAINST GEORGE SOROS.... he actively tried to get John Kerry elected as President of a country which does have nuclear weapons. Also, he wanted to be a power broker in this country to "assist" in the control of its foreign policy!

George Soros is a evil godless being and a hillary and bill supporter.

Do you think you would want to live under his thumb for awhile..... as a conservative Republican???

Is this really any business of the US?

No, but it is the business of any person who believes in individual liberty and dignity.

Many such people are Americans.
