Exactly.
Bush supports Yuschenko, not Putin's child rapist. Are you saying Bush should support Putin's child rapist instead?
Thanks, MM for that article. It was most enlightening.
I highly recommend it to others, who want to understand more about the background:
WASHINGTON TURNING SCREWS ON UKRAINE AHEAD OF ELECTION

Sound to me, that more than anything else, the Democrats were in there trying to cause trouble and a rift between Ukraine and the US, because the Ukraine government has been supporting the Iraq war.
Just remember how Jimmy Carter, under the pretext of worrying about human rights, undermined our best friend in the Middle East, the Shah of Iran, fueled the radical Islam revolution and allowed the Ayatollah Khomeini to take over Iran, and giver rise to the resurgence of radical Islam, and turn a country from a friend of the US, to a bitter enemy, and the human rights didn't get any better either.
Agree. We are not the worlds cop.
>So the US stands behind the election of someone who wants to abandon support for the Coalition in Iraq?
>Sounds like a lose lose situation.
Are you ready to trade freedom for 50,000,000 for 1600 troops in iraq from dictator-president Kuchma?
I don't think so..
You know Hitler was against muslim terrorists but somehow we didn't think it was ok to side with him.. as in this situation with Putin.
Of course Putin's man is in his little red pocket.
One way or the other. the people of the Ukraine, lose.
Um, so now its the democrats fault? Is this a joke? Putin is trying to get his grubby hands on Ukraine again, and you blame a party out of power. Brilliant.
I think these things through. I've lived and worked in Moscow, Kiev, that hideous Soviet-throwback wasteland Minsk, and Brussels - my least favorite city in the world.
Since I reject your premise that the EU is even in need of 'hemming in' anytime soon, there's no real point in answering your question. The best way to hem Europe in these days is to not try to get them to do anything, and they'll just cloister themselves in their little fantasy world for as long as they can maintain the delusion.
Aside from that, playing them one against the other is all we need to keep them on the sidelines, which is why that's exactly what we do anytime there's a serious clash of interests. Ukraine adding weight to Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic and so on would be the most effective check on the Franco-German core than anything else.

MS. BUCHAN: "The United States is deeply disturbed by extensive and credible indications of fraud committed in the Ukranian presidential election. We strongly support efforts to review the conduct of the election and urge Ukranian authorities not to certify results until investigations of organized fraud are resolved. We call on the government of Ukraine to respect the will of the Ukranian people and we urge all Ukrainians to resolve the situation through peaceful means. The government bears a special responsibility not to use or incite violence, and to allow free media to report accurately on the situation without intimidation or coercion. The United States stands with the Ukranian people in this difficult time."
Now while I dont think saying Putin is equivalent to Hitler or Stalin is exactly fair, we really should not allow our feeling over the Iraq war and the Ukraine's 1600 troops undermine our long standing support for free elections, which these demonstrably were not.
Maybe we should cut these guys some slack. After all, they just figured out that an election should have more than one candidate.
Whoa.
Funny how the Putin groupies and refusing to acknowledge that our President is supporting Yuschenko, not Putin's child rapist.
LOL!!
YOu obviously didn't read the article.
Go back and read it first.

The point is that the current Ukraine government has been supportive of our efforts in Iraq, which is a major test of their support of the US. That's the same government that Putin has been supporting. The Dems have been running over there, encouraging the opposition.
"These pro-West labels are for western median consumption. They typically mean nothing at all when you get down to the realpolitik."
Thanks. I am starting to figure it out.
Bush supports Yuschenko, not Putin's child rapist. Why is that?
Your posts are filled with labels and name-calling. They strike me as immature in nature, and not worthy of more discussion.
