My favorite is reall a sci-fi/horror movie. Alien (the first film) directed by Ridley Scott.

The Fog. The Thing. I forgot about "The Thing." I thought John Carpenter's version was an excellent thriller. My favorite scene is where they discover Wilford Brimley's spaceship under construction. "Looks like someone's been busy."

The original Alien, it was dark, dank and claustrophobic as hell
Here's one for the future...I'm surprised nobody has made an attempt yet..."The Legend of Sawney Bean".
Mel....MEL!

I am generally desensitized to most horror films...the gore does nothing for me, it has to be suspenseful. I like movies like Se7en, Silence of the Lambs, Hannibal, (Red Dragon was ok), and most recently SAW.
In SAW there were a couple of scenes that had me bracing the armrest. One in particular was wherein a victim is racing against the clock to remove a spring loaded clamp wrapped around her head. Once the time runs out, the clamp will spring open, ripping her head to pieces. In order to open the clamp she must retrieve a key buried her cell mate's stomach. It was a pretty intense scene.

I also thought the way the movie ended was clever.

I watched "Saw." It did have some moments that caused the audience to jump. The ending was a stretch, but overall it was a good movie. Reminded me of "Seven," only much more violent and gory.

I read "It" in about a week, IIRC. I just could not put the thousand page (?) book down. Wake, work, eat, read, repeat. :) My wife was a Steven King fan and thought "It" was absolutely terrifying. Don't think I'm going to read it...

Exorcist, Psycho, Alien, The Haunting and finally the Shining
Movie I was referring to in #278 is "The Leech Woman".
Not my favorite horror movie. Just a bizarre (albeit entertaining, imo,) one.

"Dog Soldiers...B horror flick, brit actors, filmed in scottland."
Oh, yeah. The werewolves were rather badly made, but the movie had an atmosphere, especially in the first half.
My choice would be Donnie Darko.

Anyone see the movie "Saw" that is playing now? I heard that was the scariest movie and was wanting other opinions! SAW was good. The scenes were gory and suspenseful. I almost walked out at least a couple of times because of the gore and subject matter, which tells me its good flick :). I was a little disappointed with the writing through most of the movie because I thought I had the ending figured out. I was pleasantly surprised to find I was wrong.

Guess I mught be a little older than you, but the 1951 original version of The Thing with James Arness is classic.
Maybe it's because I was still a kid when I saw it, but it still gives me the creeps.

Donnie Darko was a great movie. I plan to get it on DVD. Pretty decent website too. But I never thought of it as a horror movie.

DAGON (2001)
Plot Summary for
Based on a short story by H.P. Lovecraft, the undisputed master of the macabre, Dagon tells the story of Paul Marsh, a young man who discovers that the truth will not set him free instead it condemns him to a waking nightmare of unrelenting horror. A boating accident off the coast of Spain sends Paul and his girlfriend Barbara to the decrepit fishing village of Imboca looking for help. As night falls, people start to disappear and things not quite human start to appear. Paul finds himself pursued by the entire town. Running for his life, he uncovers Imboca's dark secret: that they pray to Dagon, a monstrous god of the sea. And Dagon's unholy offspring are freakish half-human creatures on the loose in Imboca...
My comments - Very creepy movie made in Spain. It also has thee most realistic Mermaid scene I have ever seen in any movie, (hey I'm an old sailor, give me a break). Seriously this is one spooky movie that never fails to creep me out.
