Sounds like you trust the Chinese more than I do. They are
already in key places in South America and have become a
major presence in Panama and the day could come with a large
enough military presence behind them that they could simply
win a defacto war without firing a shot in many areas of the
world. What would we do?

What would we do?What would THEY do? Occupy California? What benefits does attempting to expand China to the western hemisphere give them?
Lets say they succeed taking Taiwan - that could happen if there is no one else but USA/Japan/Australia to stand and shout?
There is a huge nationalistic issue with Taiwan - but they have no other legitimate claims anywheres else. What would they do with an occupied Japan?
I just dont see it.
