==China was first up, and Chinese President Hu Jintao (JÀAÀÜ) said after the meeting, "We ... exchanged views on the question of Taiwan. I expressed my high appreciation to Bush's adherence to the `one China' policy and the three communiques, and to his opposition to [Taiwan's] independence."

This is sickening. We are pushing a free people into Communist slavery. God will judge us if we follow through on this madness. Start calling/writing your congressional reps and tell them to oppose this perfidious sellout of our longtime ally, Taiwan.

Quix, seriously, you are right. If there are calamities ahead, the one who trusts the Lord and is walking in obedience to Him will be "in the secret place of the Most High & shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty". (As is Psalm 91, and yes, it still applies in year 2004.)

Now, His way of providing "the secret place of the most high" and "the shadow of the almighty" will vary from one believer to the next, but undoubtedly will be there as an expression of His love and provision.

For those of us who have committed our lives to the Lord Jesus, reminders such as yours are good so we stay focused and obedient, and also so we will share with others who might not yet believe, share He is real, and He is good, and He is a rewarder of them that diligently seek Him, and that no man cometh to the Father except by Him. And He is the Lord Jesus Christ, the King of Glory!

And indeed, the wise man lives each day ready to die at a moment's notice, to go and meet his maker, and to be ready for the thing that comes after this, the Judgment.

And whether folks like it or not, there are signs that we are, as it says in the Bible, in the last days of mankind. If that is the case, as you say, each family will be safest if they are, to the best of their ability, smack dab in the middle of God's sovereign will for their life. And then, come what may, miraculous deliverance, being thrown into the lion's den or other tribulation, or abruptly facing a sudden and unexpected death, they will be eligible for and indeed guaranteed of God's presence with them as they go through any of the above.

As for folks who have been too busy or too agnostic or too proud or too scornful or too comfortable or too arrogant or too religious or too legalistic or too lazy or too addicted or too successful to:

Seek Him, read the Word, pray, find a good church, faithfully attend said church, clean up their lives in obedience to God's commands, (stop sinning, stop cursing, stop doubting, stop rebelling, stop hating, stop watching TV, & cetra), they won't be ready. Their screams of terror will be heard all around and it may be too late then for them to call on the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ to save them. Some will cry out to Him at the last second and if it's not too late, He will gladly save them, even then. But some will have waited too long. Their screams of terror will continue as they experience death without the help of Him Who conquered death, Jesus Christ.

And how sad for those who were never even warned.

But, for FReepers who read these threads and then do nothing, if we are right, you'll wish you had. Might be worth stopping and thinking about, eh?

Yes, practically nobody understands that the real reason we fought in Vietnam was to try to hold onto a foothold in SE Asia for possible/probable need in a future conflict with Communist China.

we caved in totally and gave out apologies for hitting their plane was not good.

I remember Senator Feinstein groveling, but I remember that Bush said we were sorry for the death of their pilot as we would be for anyone, but we never apologized or took responsibility for the midair collision.

I specifically remember Chinese commentators being angry that one Chinese word used in the official translation meant sorrow but was not the one that meant regret with nuance of personal responsibility that they wanted.

You may be right. Hubris may lead to China starting a war with us sooner rather than the later that clever strategic thinking on their part would lead one to believe.

I may be overestimating their intelligence.

Any "talk of China invading Taiwan even in 2005 and highly probable no later than 2006 so it doesn't sabotage the 2008 Olympics" is complete nonsense. The only way for a Chinese invasion of Taiwan to NOT sabotage the 2008 Olympics is for any such invasion to take place AFTER the 2008 Olympics.

The basin behind the Three Gorges Dam should be almost full by then. One cruise missile, no more dam, 100s of 1000s homeless or dead downstream, and China's prestige in the world nada.

North Korea with Nuclear Weapons. Bad? Yes?? Do I get an agreement? Okay. Let's move on now.

Megalomaniac/danger to the rest of the free world #2:

China regularly threatens the people of Taiwan ( untouched by the Chinese since 1949 ) that they will be invaded by the Chinese to reclaim them as their own. Do you KNOW anyone from Taiwan, tallhappy, Almondjoy? I do. They were born there. Lived their whole lives there. They are Taiwanese. Do you enjoy YOUR freedom? Do you want it taken away? When Iraq invaded Kuwait, the people who suffered through the invasion had to endure the murder of its people, Rape, Torture, Imprisonment. Luckily for THEM, Iraq threatened the world by disrupting the free flow of oil at market prices. The people of Kuwait are now "free" ( as much as they are ruled by the Sheiks that were there before, and not Saddam, Hussein.

"I'm not sure what the "one at a time" part means." Once North Korea is dealt with, the next issue to have to deal with is CHINA ... very troubling, unless, of course, you don't give a S*IT, and don't care about people around the world having their liberties torn from them.

Hu Jintao Says: be prepared for an "armed liberation." of Taiwan The US government ( usually ) says: the people of Taiwan have the right to determine their own future. ... Not China. If Powell is making some vague reference that the US won't mess with China over Taiwan, just to speed along the North Korean issue, then so be it.

Not to long ago, "JimmaH Carter" favored China over Taiwan. Hopefully, with Republican administrations ( as well as the members of the administration who are supposed to act on behalf of it's President ) we will see a nation that continues to support the people of Taiwan. If that fails to happen, then we will simply abandon free people in the face of a clear and present danger that is China.

News reports such as this: Tension rises as China scours the globe for energy

do not make me believe that the future id rosy, and actions by Powell such as this, are not pleasant to read.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Good point. We did lose the 'battle for Vietnam' here at home thanks to our pal Kerry AND we did 'win the war' by stopping the spread of communism more or less in its tracks right there in SE Asia. The countries that were spared- Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, etc- are free today BECAUSE we fought the commies to a stop right there in Nam. They are the Tigers today because of our great sacrifice for 15 years in Vietnam. That was where we stopped the inexorable advance of the falling dominoes. Our 'victory' over communism there has left us and our allies far far stronger to contain the islamofascist beast and expansionist tendencies of Red China in the SE Asian theater. Who knows, Vietnam may be an ally against the Chinese threat, for which they have no love lost, yet again.
Never say never. But I can't see them just up and deciding to invade until the Olympics. They could then use all the athletes and their supporters and entourage as hostages. Or they just wait.
I don't see it happening soon, either way. China seems to take the long view. They have been around thousands of years.
I think it's more likely that China's economy will go off a cliff.
Re 70. How can Bush support the Chinese Communists to, at least in your scenario, edn the N. Korean threat. Then turn around and deny everything he told Hu and break all his earlier promises?
Well, we apologized. The statement was in English. We translated it and the Chinese translated it as well. Sorry or apology was there a few times and in the instance you are talking about, the Chinese of course translated it in one way, we in another.
Either way, it was an apology and not just an expression of regret over the death of Wang Wei.
I think it's extremely difficult to overestimate their IQ.
They are every bit as smart as we are. And, they are much better at pretending otherwise, than we are.
