WASHINGTON, Nov. 18 /U.S. Newswire/ -- A prominent national Islamic civil rights and advocacy group today called for an apology from the MSNBC cable television network over comments on its "Imus in the Morning" program that referred to Palestinians as "filthy animals" and suggested that they all be killed.

The Washington-based Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) also urged that the program's host, Don Imus, be reprimanded for failing to challenge his colleagues' inflammatory remarks. CAIR, which says it received numerous complaints about the comments, quoted a transcript of Imus' November 12th program in which he and his on-air colleagues engaged in the following discussion about live coverage of Palestinian President Yasser Arafat's funeral:

DON IMUS: They're (the Palestinians) eating dirt and that fat pig wife of his is living in Paris.

COLLEAGUE: They're all brainwashed, though. That's what it is. And they're stupid, to begin with, but they're brainwashed now. Stinking animals. They ought to drop the bomb right there, kill 'em all right now...

IMUS: Well, the problem is we have (reporter) Andrea (Mitchell) there; we don't want anything to happen to her.

COLLEAGUE: Oh, she's got to get out. Andrea, get out and then drop the bomb and kill everybody...

COLLEAGUE: Look at this. Animals. Animals!

In a letter to MSNBC President Neal Shapiro, CAIR stated: "We are firm defenders of the First Amendment, but these hate-filled and racist remarks can only serve to legitimize anti-Muslim and anti-Arab bigotry in our society and could lead to further discrimination against members of the Islamic and Arab-American communities." (CAIR also filed a complaint with the FCC because "Imus in the Morning" is a nationally-syndicated radio program.)

This is not the first time Imus has been involved in a controversy over anti-Arab and Islamophobic remarks. As early as 1985, he was forced to apologize for referring to Arabs as "goat- humping weasels." (Sunday Mail, 4/21/85) He has also been criticized for using the derogatory term "raghead." (Accuracy in Media) In a reference to the crash of an Iranian airliner earlier this year that killed 43 passengers, Imus said, "When I hear stories like that, I think who cares." He then stated: "Too bad it wasn't full of Saudi Arabians." (National Iranian American Council)

Earlier this year, CAIR announced a campaign called "Hate Hurts America" designed to counter hate speech on talk radio. SEE: http://www.cair-net.org/hatehurtsamerica/

CAIR, America's largest Muslim civil liberties group, is headquartered in Washington, D.C., and has 29 offices and chapters nationwide and in Canada. Its mission is to enhance understanding of Islam, encourage dialogue, protect civil liberties, empower American Muslims, and build coalitions that promote justice and mutual understanding.

"COLLEAGUE: Look at this. Animals. Animals!"

What is he specifically referring to here?

I agree with the sentiment but must disagree with his saying it over the airwaves. Once you let people spew like this, the next thing you know people will say it about Jews, Christians or any other group that the host of a radio or TV show happens to hate.
Imus should be educated and literate enough to communicate his scorn for them without recourse to hate speech.

Jews and Christians are ALREADY the number one target for hatred and ridicule by the media. Those religions are forbidden in the public schools while Islam is forced down children's throats.

And, all the while, Chirstians and Jews are no threat to anyone.

The same can NOT be said about the "Religion of Peace."

He has nothing to apologize for. These arab thugs who call themselves "palestinians" are just that. It's how they act.
There is no "racism" involved either. "Palestinian" isn't a race.
I support the guy for saying the truth. It's about time.

Look at what these Imams preach in their mosk/ammo dumps, they call Jews pigs, Monkey's etc. Christians are "unclean', a Hindu is the lowest of all. There is NOTHING to apologize for, But Muslims can start by tearing out all the violence and insults from their korans. (there would be nothing left but a front and back cover)

It's a cult of death, that's all it is, it reduces man to animal like behavior, brainwashes them to commit these atrocities. Bomb them all, it's the only way it's going to stop. Ban the Koran.

John Sylvester aka Sly In The Morning is a chickens*** punk. He basically didn't apologize and said he was repeating something Harry Belafonte said a couple years ago about Rice. In essence, he figures if a popular black figure can say it, so can he.

Unfortunately, what legitimizes anti-Muslim and anti-Arab bigotry in our society is the continued terrorist and racist activities of Muslims and Arabs. If they would stop blowing people up and stop trying to take over the World at the point of a sword, 99.9% of the people would have no problem with them at all.

Take a look at the Indian (meaning Hindustani) community in this country. They are every bit as foreign and unfamiliar as the Muslim or Arab, but they are generally peaceful. They don't promote violence, and they don't want to take over the World. While there is some friction in areas with a large new immigrant Indian community, as there always is, not many people really go out of their way to persecute Indians. Anybody who does so is rightly seen as a bigot.

If the Muslims and Arabs would live and let live, they would find that the vast majority of Americans are of exactly the same mind.

Imus' apology...

"Uhhm, sorry you are a bunch of dirt eating, brainwashed, stinking animals. Please stop all racist, hate-filled invective against Westerners. Please stop burning statues of American soldiers. Please stop beating your children to death because they ate something. Please stop beating your women and denying them simple and basic human rights. Oh, and the suicide bombings. And all the hate distributed by your media. When you act like human beings, we will be glad to reconsider your current status."

at least, that is how it should go....

You are totally correct. I do not mind anyone from any nation coming to our country wanting to make a better life, unless their idea of a better life is to take over our country (and all others) and kill everyone who isn't one of them

CAIR's campaign will continue until the day it's backed up with a "van Gogh". Then the real chilling effect will set in. That will be the day Muslim political clout in our nation will be born.
