GW should offer ambassador ships to France to Moi Kerri, to Ireland to the drunk Kennedy, and other wonderful ambassadorships to any rat senator with a Republican governor.
She's an R -- the appointed replacement would probably be someone like Nancy Johnson, though.
There's no guarantee that were a position offered the governor would pick a Republican.
I would have absolutely no problem with a governor choosing another Dem out of respect to a Senator who essentally took a promotion, and answered the call of duty for his country. The people of CT that elected him deserve to have their President and Governor respect the choice they made in Senators, and to advocate shifting gears on them in a situation like this is, IMLTHO, wrong.
If the President deems him to be the right man for the job, negotiating such a deal with the Governor of Connecticut could be a fantastic political move, or not. Ensuring the selection of another pro-defence and relatively conservatve Democrat would show a true interest in getting the best man for the job.
Do I think the Dems would truly respect such a move, or honor the concept in the future? Doubtful. But sometimes you do the right thing because it is the right thing to do.
Jodi Rell is the RINO Governor of Connecticut. Who she'd appoint is unknown. She might run for the seat herself in 2006 if Leiberman takes a cabinet position.
