China to crush any "Taiwan independence" attempts at all costs

China to crush any "Taiwan independence" attempts at all costs

A central government spokesman warned Wednesday that China would resolutely crush any "Taiwan independence" attempts at all costs if the Taiwan authorities try to create any major splittist incidents through so-called "Constitutional reform".

"If Chen Shui-bian dares to use this ('Constitutional reform') to create any major incidents aimed at 'Taiwan independence', we will resolutely and completely crush such splittist attempts at all costs," said Li Weiyi, spokesman for the Taiwan Affairs Office under the State Council, China's cabinet, at a press briefing Wednesday in Beijing.

Asked to comment on Taiwan leader Chen Shui-bian's recent remarks which claimed that Taiwan was a sovereign state and needed a fresh constitution, the spokesman said: "This has once again exposed Chen's true face of seeking 'Taiwan independence'."

"In promoting the so-called 'Constitutional reform', Chen is actually seeking to separate Taiwan from China," said Li.

He said Taiwan is never a sovereign state. It is proved by all historical facts and laws again and again that and it is widely recognized by the international community that Taiwan is an integral part of the Chinese territory.

Chen's education reform aims to educate people with "Taiwan independence" The political attempt of Taiwan leader Chen Shui-bian's so-called education reform is to change Taiwan's education into ideological education of "Taiwan independence", said the spokesman.

Behind all his activities Chen wants to increase tense and hostile across the Taiwan Strait, said Li.

"The facts have showed that Chen has never stopped the attempt to promote 'Taiwan independence,'" he said.

Taiwan local media recently quoted Chen Shui-bian as saying that Taiwan needs a great reform of education to settle "the problem of self-identity."

The education department of Taiwan authorities is trying to amend the history textbook for high school students following ideas of "Taiwan independence," according to local media reports.

Taiwan is an indiscerptible part of the Chinese territory, which is a clear fact recognized in the Cairo Declaration and Potsdam Proclamation, Li said.

The Cairo Declaration was signed by leaders of three allied nations, China, the United States and Britain, on Dec. 1, 1943, demanding that all the territories Japan had occupied from China, such as the northeastern parts of China, Taiwan and the Penghu Islands, be returned to China.

Taiwan authority's discriminative policy prevents cross-strait trade normalization Taiwan authority's discriminative trade policy, not the one-China policy of the Chinese mainland, is the major reason preventing the cross-strait trade normalization, said the spokesman.

"The assertion of Taiwan authority totally turns things upside down," said Li, who gave his comment to Taiwan authority's charge that the trade abnormality across the Taiwan Strait resulted from the delay of bilateral negotiation for political precondition by the mainland government.

He pointed out that the Chinese mainland is Taiwan's largest export destination while Taiwan is the second largest import source of the Chinese mainland. But up to September this year, Chinese mainland's accumulated trade deficit to Taiwan has reached 261.039 billion US dollars owing to the intentional, restrictive measures by Taiwan authority.

Taiwan authority has launched a large amount of restriction on the products and talents from the Chinese mainland, which seriously blocked the trade normalization between Taiwan and the Chinese mainland, he said.

Taiwan is not eligible to enter the UN Taiwan, an inseparable part of China, is not eligible to enter the United Nations (UN), an organization of only sovereign states.

When asked to comment on Chen Shui-bian's plan to apply for the UN membership for island using the name of Taiwan. Li said the Chinese UN membership represents both mainland and Taiwan, which has been solved at political, legal and procedural level already for a long time.

The spokesman said the idea of applying for the membership of UN with the name of Taiwan was another step Chen Shui-bian made topush forward "Taiwan independence" separatist attempts.

"However, any moves running counter to the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and the resolution 2758 made by the Untied Nations General Assembly and challenging the one-China principle widely acknowledged by the international society could by no means be agreed and supported by member countries of the UN," the spokesman said.

RMB interest rates hike has little impact on Taiwan businesses in mainland The raise of RMB interest rates has had little impact on the operation and financing of Taiwan-funded companies on the mainland.

China's central bank raised both lending and deposit interest rates 0.27 percentage points on Oct. 29. It also broadened the floating degree of the lending interest rate of RMB and allowed the RMB deposit interest rate to float downward.

"The rise of RMB interest rate will benefit the sound development of its national economy, which will provide a better environment for Taiwan-invested enterprises," said Li Weiyi.

He pointed out that the adjusting of interest rate slightly raised financial costs for enterprises. Those Taiwan-invested enterprises with good credit will continue to get low-cost loans from banks.

Beginning January 1, the Chinese mainland financial institutions will stop the practice of determining lending rates according to the size of business.

This will enable small and medium-sized Taiwan-funded companies not to pay extra more financial cost for the rise of interest rates, he said.

This is so Orwellian. Taiwan is already independent by any meaningful definition of the word.

"China is a primitive uncivilized backwater."

I'm not quite sure how you mean this, but if you mean this fairly literally, I have to disagree. There are parts of China that are primitive, but these can just as well be ignored. What matters are the larger areas. Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Hong Kong. Look at the east coastal part of China by itself. Inner China tends to distort the economic statistics downward. If the western 3/4 of the country was separated, China would have much higher per capita GDP.

Article 2

China cedes to Japan in perpetuity and full sovereignty the following territories, together with all fortifications, arsenals, and public property thereon:—
...
(b) The island of Formosa, together with all islands appertaining or belonging to the said island of Formosa.

[Treaty of Shimonoseki, 17 April 1895]

China has no claim on Taiwan whatsoever. If it takes a couple of hundred megatons to remind them, so much the better.

I know someone who is VERY "familiar" with that region. He seems to think SE Asia is getting ready to blow. I hate the thought of China invading Taiwan, and us standing by letting it happen.

It would be sad to see the citizens of Taiwan massacred because they want to be free.

Taiwan Relations Act specifically states that we will come to the aid of Republic of China (free China). Since the Taiwan independence movement is to rewrite the constitution and dissolve Republic of China, it is unclear if we still have any legal obligation to aid them.

Besides the cost of war will be so catastrophic, cool heads need to be in charged.

Thanks to the UN and Jimmy Carter those agreements mean nothing. Remember we officially agree with the one China policy, being the hypocrites that we are.

"China has no claim on Taiwan whatsoever".

Japan to Asia at the end of 19 century and the first
half of 20 century was nothing difference from Nazi
Germany. If you think the Treaty of Shimonoseki to
be valid, I can name a number of treaties which claim
the entire Asia to be Japan's territory.

People in Taiwan speak Taiwanese/Chinese and has an
origin from China. The problem of Taiwan is only between
Taiwan and mainland China. It has nothing to do with
Japan. It is humiliating to hear that Taiwan is part
of Japan.

The problem of Taiwan is only between Taiwan and mainland China.

You're making it sound as though it's an internal Chinese matter. That effectively concedes Beijing's side of the argument.

The final version of Taiwan is to become independent or if CCP step down, unification is considerable. Japan is out of question.

No one was seriously suggesting that Taiwan be placed back under Japanese control. That treaty was brought up merely to demonstrate that the Communists in Beijing never once established their sovereignty over the island. It is therefore not an internal Chinese matter, but a matter of international concern. If China invades Taiwan simply because Taiwan "declared independence" (that is, simply stated the current obvious reality), then it will have committed an act of international aggression.

To reiterate: China has no legal or legitimate claim over Taiwan by any stretch of the imagination.

Look at the ludicrous argument in this article: citing press releases after meetings of Allied leaders during WWII.

Our ally was the Republic of China. Taiwan is the Free China which fought with the allies against the Japanese Empire.

Actually Taiwan was part of Japan. We bombed Taiwan during WWII.

The Chinese occupied Taiwan after Japanese surrender. In 1949 they lost to the communists so moved to Taiwan and set up a government in exile there.

That was more than 50 years ago.

Taiwan is Taiwan and China is China. Time to stop appeasing the ChiComs .

Yes, of course. But Taiwan was not part of the ROC and was part of Japan.

It's an interesting quirk of history that the ROC government and about a million of their citizens were able to find refuge there after the communists took over China in 1949.

Indeed Taiwan and ROC are used interchangeably.

The communists are a rogue regime. Nothing to do with Taiwan one way or the other. After 1949 Taiwan provided a base to take back China from the communists but it never happened. I wish it had. China was very vulnerable, especially during their huge famine of the late 50's, early sixties.

raise tariff on chinese imports commensurate with their rhetoric heat level about taking taiwan in hand.

There is a tariff, it's called dollar devaluation and China has lost $25 billion in just the last month as the dollar has lost 5% of its value against other currencies.

Look for the renimbi to float soon, and Walmart to be exporting to China.
