D, provide a similar incident where 40+ people watched while an innocent girl was murdered for no reason, without a single spectator calling the police. I think you stretch it to say that because fights were common people assumed that it was a boyfriend-girlfriend fight--the woman yelled for help, and many said they just didn't want to get involved!

O, I don't base my perception of NYC on Batman--I base it on the voters that run the city and consistently vote yellow. I don't think much at all has changed in New York, regardless of how old the Kitty Genovese story is. And I'd love to hear anything that demonstrates how it wouldn't happen again today.

First off, the chances of Kitty G happening again are slim. For one thing, there is now a 911 system, which didn't exist back then. There are also patrol cars dispatched via radio. When Kitty was murdered NYC was still a cop on the beat, no radios, town and call your local precinct. Anyway, response time for cops averages under 7 minutes, I believe(it could be slightly more or less). So, NYC today is basically a city of 8 million cell phones hooked up to 911, which is hooked up to radio dispatch etc. etc.

In regards to a similar incident -- I can't remember one, either inside or outside of NYC, since my memory doesn't work that way. However, not a day goes by when I don't read of some horror taking place in the burbs. Some woman who starves her kids or a decomposing body, etc. etc. etc. And the neighbors always say, "He was so quiet. Minded his own business."

As for voting -- going back to the days of Petey Stuyvesant, New Yorkers have always voted in what's best for business. New York is a commerce town.
