This battle was lost when Bush supported Specter in the primary. Now we are stuck trying to keep him happy. I guess in their defense, they didn't know then that we would be so overall successful in the general election. They didn't know we could afford to get rid of Specter.

I share your "shock" ... this party has no testicular fortitude! It only cares about the grassroots when their fate at the ballot box in on the line.

I know that's how it looks, but if you all haven't see Brit Hume's show today - be sure and watch it. I was feeling the same way until I heard what Michael Barone had to say about it. Barone says he's convinced Specter has gotten the message and will deliver for Bush - or else.

But .. Barone also mentioned that Specter is a leader on tort reform (which is also part of the judiciary committee's role), and Specter is needed to champion that cause for Bush.

Also .. Barone mentioned that Specter is more easily controlled as the chairman than he would be as just a member of the committee. As just a member, he could align himself with the left and cause Bush all kinds of problems (Cici agreed with that assessment).

So .. while I'm suspicious .. let's just see what happens when Judge Thomas comes up for Chief Justice. Schumer has already said there is going to be a fight.
