Kerry Critic Displays Courage Under Fire
Chicago Sun-Times ^ | November 11, 2004 | Nat Hentoff

Posted on 11/16/2004 4:00:36 PM PST by Clodia Pulcher

Of all the targets of vitriol and attempted ambushes during the presidential campaign, I most admired John O'Neill of the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth for his calm determination to stand his ground on his charges against John Kerry's Vietnam service in Unfit for Command, the book he co-authored.

O'Neill was called a ''liar'' to his face on a number of TV appearances, and, on an Oct. 14 ''Nightline,'' ABC-TV's Ted Koppel actually sent a crew to Vietnam to film alleged eyewitnesses in order to disprove one of the accounts -- how Kerry won his Silver Star -- in Unfit for Command. Casually, ABC news director Andrew Morse mentioned that ''the Vietnamese require an official minder to accompany journalists on reporting trips.'' The minder-censor from the Communist totalitarian state was there to ensure that the ''eyewitnesses'' stuck to the government script.

I hope he goes on the talking circuit and makes some money from all his pain and suffering.

This from Nat Hentoff??!!

I thought he was a thoroughly liberal man who hated W and wanted Kerry for President! Am I missing something here?

Hentoff may be a liberal, but he sure doesn't drink the kool-aid.

This is good. The liberal myth-weavers definitely have the Swiftvets solidly as demons. I think Nat Hentoff has influence well outside of the conservative camp and will contradict the liberal myth.

All Kerry had to do was allowing all to open his 180 or was it 280? You know what I mean.

Henthoff also decries the media lies and distortions used against pro-lifers.

He's a principled liberal, a dying breed.

"And, indeed, the Swift Boat Veterans did a lot to keep Kerry from the Oval Office."

Thank YOU!

The only things factually disputed are two events - in the Bronze Star incdent one or more witnesses thought there was small arms fire from the shofe, and the first Purple Heart incident on the skiff two fellows said the anti-Kerry officer wasn't there, though if that was the incident Kerry was injured (supposedly) on is unclear.

Everything else, IIRC, is not disputed with any contrary testimony.

According to Jim Quinn, Hentoff is his favorite liberal. You can disagree with him, but he's not a punk. Oldstyle liberal.

Hentoff was most famous in the past as an outstanding Jazz critic.

Nat Hentoff has always been a Liberal, but he's been a living oxymoron: a FAIR Liberal.

I almost always enjoy his writing and he is always "fair and balanced" as well as insightful.

The people of the United States will be forever greatful to the courage under enemy fire shown by John O'Neill and the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth. Enemies of the United States attacked these brave men in 1970 and 2004.

Hentoff's main issue is the 1st Amendment. He's opposed to much of the Patriot Act. But he wasn't very impressed with Kerry.

He appears weekly in the Washington Times and I find that I don't disagree with him often - and when I do it is on the Patriot Act.

Hentoff is a First Amendment absolutist. He comes at it from the left but he thinks for himself.
