Before you accept any checks, see if you're entitled to Legal Aid representation. Your city should have a Legal Aid office; their mission is to help broke people get legal representation.

Accepting FR donations might preclude your eligibility for Legal Aid, especially if FR donations are legally considered income.

Was the suit filed in federal or Connecticuit court? If it was in federal court, you could file a motion for summary judgment.

Silly. You can file a motion for summary judgment in state court too. But to do that you have to take the pleadings of the other party as fact. If he's stated (rather than proven) a case in his pleadings, you're not going to win a SJ motion.
