Please help me on this fundraiser

I have been accused of something that I didn't do And I am being sued for it! On December 2, 2000, I held a rally in New Haven in front of then Vice Presidential candidate Joe Lieberman's house, doing what little I could to show support for the newly elected President Bush, and to show my frustration at the Democrats in their attempts to overturn the genuinely won election by George W. Bush. At the end of the rally, Former Ct State Senator Tom Scott was speaking on the back of my truck, when all of a sudden the lead Democrat supporter of the counter rally held at the same location, started to approach my truck, then turned and took 3 or 4 running steps and jumped on the bed of my truck in a manner that I thought he was going to attack someone on the truck: either me or Tom. I stepped to his side and held out my arm to stop him as he ran into my arm and immediately stopped his forward motion. I kept my hand held out in front of him to prevent him from going forward on the truck bed and get closer to Tom who was speaking at the time. After 3 seconds or so, the man who jumped on my truck immediately turned and jumped down off the truck into the arms of the Police who quickly escorted him away from my truck. The whole incident lasted no more than 5 seconds it seems. Tom and I decided to not press charges for assault or trespass on my truck, and let him go. 9 months later, the man filed suit against me for assault. I am not joking. 9 months later. He claims I grabbed his throat. Look at the picture. This picture was taken December 2, 2000. That is the man who claims I was grabbing his throat. My hand is on his chest, not his throat. My hand was NEVER on his throat, nor was it ever near his throat!

Why I made this website Because of the lawsuit, I am forced to endure thousands of dollars of debt that I cannot afford. I have been employed only in temporary positions since 2001 when telecom collapsed, and am deep in debt. This man is trying to use the legal system to get tens of thousands of dollars from me that does not belong to him, and he is doing it by claiming I assaulted him, which I did not do at all.

CAN YOU PLEASE HELP?? I am forced to ask, but can you consider donating to help me pay my legal fees? Because of this false charge against me, I am now over $8000 in debt to my lawyer, and we cannot continue until I can pay my bill! Could you please send me $5 or $10 or $20 to help my legal fees? Has your attorney countersued? looks like he was attempting to trespass on or otherwise vandalize your truck and yes has filed a nuisance suit. Is this a civil rights action? I understand in civil action suits, the loser has to pay the attorney fees for both sides.

I attended a couple of FReeps at the VP Mansion in DC in 2000, and after the Gore forces called out for help to counter our side, some of their thugs came over to our side of the street and tried to create havoc, getting right in our faces, muttering obscenities, and other behaviors we've come to expect of Democrat supporters.

If I can swing a few bucks in the coming days, I will send a donation, just don't know how much, if anything, I will have. God Bless you, this is a horrible situation.

Jim, you're a great FReeper and I'd like to contribute. I've enjoyed your posts and photos over the years, and your VOICE (heard you at the Torricelli/Clinton FReep in Newark years ago -- I think they could hear you all the way across the river too).

philetus, how much of a cut does paypal take? It might be worth it to get more donations. Checks and money orders can be problematic for various reasons. If RaceBannon had a paypal account I'd have donated already.

This is a late follow-up to your post about taxes on contributions you received. Please check the laws on this. Contributions of the type you are getting from freepers should have no trouble qualifying as gifts, and would therefore not be taxable unless a single donor gave you over $10,000. Please check with a tax pro on this, but I really don't think you owe a penny in taxes on the contributions.
