LONDON (Reuters) - A television pool report by U.S. network NBC said on Monday that a U.S. Marine had shot dead an unarmed and wounded Iraqi prisoner in a mosque in Falluja.
The Iraqi was one of five wounded prisoners left in the mosque after Marines had fought their way in on Friday and Saturday. There was no immediate comment from the Pentagon (news - web sites) on the report.
U.S. forces launched an offensive one week ago on Falluja, and have gained overall control of the formerly rebel-held city, although scattered resistance remains.
The pool report by NBC correspondent Kevin Sites said the mosque had been used by insurgents to attack U.S. forces, who stormed it and an adjacent building, killing 10 militants and wounding the five.
Sites said the wounded had been left in the mosque for others to pick up and move to the rear for treatment. No reason was given why that had not happened.
A second group of Marines entered the mosque on Saturday after reports it had been reoccupied. Footage from the embedded television crew showed the five still in the mosque, although several appeared to be already close to death, Sites said.
He said one Marine noticed one of the prisoners was still breathing.
A Marine can be heard saying on the pool footage provided to Reuters Television: "He's fucking faking he's dead. He faking he's fucking dead."
"The Marine then raises his rifle and fires into the man's head. The pictures are too graphic for us to broadcast," Sites said. No images of the shooting were shown in the footage provided to Reuters.
The report said the Marine, who had returned to duty after being shot in the face a day earlier, had been removed from the field and was being questioned by the U.S. military.
Sites said the shot prisoner "did not appear to be armed or threatening in any way."
"I'm sure you get the gist though."
Yes, very nicely done. Very good post.
I agree: they are cannon-fodder for the likes of Bin-Laden and the other unspellable names I won't struggle with tonight, either. Do you see those guys putting their lives on the line? No, they are holed up in safe places; they get out while the getting is good, and leave the minions behind to die. To die like, dare I say it, pigs? Esp. the suicide bombers, for heavens' sakes! If it is so noble, why hasn't Bin Laden done it!?!
The women in scarves and burkhas: they are the useful idiots (not to mention the Western press! LoL!) If they would be merely human women, they would -- at least in France and Germany! where they have the culture behind them -- refuse to be identified as a submissive slave by wearing the darned thing. Then, without the submissive women, Islam would be done for.
Yes, Bush has a good strategy. I do think freedom and education will break the spell, in time. Tho that does not explain those dumb broads in the scarves and burkhas in Europe!
After 9/11, we flew out of Prague back to the US. There was a burkha'd woman, you could only see her eyes, if you peered. And I did, cause it would be a perfect disguise for a terrorist! Her husband was in western dress -- jeans. Now, there were lots of western women around, and none of US were in Burkhas; yet her husband managed to control his passions, and did not attack any of us. So the logic of the burkha-prison was totally destroyed for her to see. If he could resist US, he could resist Muslim women, too, who were not shrouded in the cape of death -- I mean, it looks just exactly like the costume of the Grim Reaper! I wonder that they are as helpless as they act -- eg in Europe or here. I heard often of GIs marrying submissive Korean women, and then when they got here, well they were not going to play that role anymore!
In your opinion, do the troops resent the need to be so aware of the Media political correctness? If they do, is there concern that keeping the embeds and cameras with them, could damage morale to the point that the start to question if is worth it.
We here all of the time, the soldiers saying the "mission" is worth it, but if they see one of their own being court-martialed for something that each one of them might have been inclined to do out of caution, will they become too cautious. Or will they become less effective out of resentment?
I am curious, having never been in combat. My husband is a Vietnam veteran, but he doesn't talk about it. Besides, he said that he didn't have a camera following him around.
He should have shot the reporter and camera man first, then the terrorist.
Sites said the wounded had been left in the mosque for others to pick up and move to the rear for treatment. No reason was given why that had not happened.
How about because of the ongoing battle?
A second group of Marines entered the mosque on Saturday after reports it had been reoccupied. Footage from the embedded television crew showed the five still in the mosque, although several appeared to be already close to death, Sites said.
It was thought to be reoccupied, therefore the wounded in the mosque were no longer prisoners. They were wounded combatants and they had not surrendered, correct?
It sounds like BS that they should even question this guy, other than what is routinely done after combat.
It's WAR! The media should not be showing this.
Yes, that is correct. The terrorists do not acknowlege laws of war. I would hope that in our PC silliness, we would not forfeit a Marine who kills terrorists.
I couldn't agree more.....Who's side are those so called Media on anyway....
Good, I'm glad he shot the guy...... Who knows what those guys are capable of.??
There's No Place for being "politcally correct" in WAR!!
These are the ENEMY!!!!
I get so tired of all this negativity for these brave young men who risk their lives for us to be able to live in Freedom........
Once more? I don't think we got it the first three times... ;-)
Ready to go to range as I described above. You are asking for perfection that does not exist.
It's war, and the media should not be showing this.
Proper perspective is key.
Thats right! In fact he was not a prisoner.
I'm watching our local news right now reporting on a young Marine from my hometown who was killed a day or so ago in Fallujah.
I hate our MSM.
"You are asking for perfection that does not exist."
I agree with what you're saying...I hope there's evidence that gets this Marine off. A question to ponder...would this be under investigation if the MSM had not been on site?
People, listen to this post:
"Well said (see my post 391). Folks, this incident has nothing to do with the blond that was found dead with no limbs...it has nothing to do with American civilians that were decapitated...it has nothing to do with Kerry shooting some kid in the back 35 years ago...it has nothing to do with the contractors that were hung from the bridge. It has everything to do with being "civilized". Hopefully, we will never stoop to the "low" of these savages. I think if you read Steel Wolf's post 431, the military absolutely does not condone this type of action. I think we should heed Rush's advice: para-phasing, "if we think like terrorists, we become one of them". It would be fine with me if our great "fighting machine" took out 1200 more terrorists this week, but let's do it with proper military ROE."
If you blindly endorse the killing of the enemy under any circumstances, without regard for the rules of warfare, you are only giving ammunition to the 2004 version of the John Kerry of 1971.
Of course not. The media is taking this out of context.
This enemy was caught in an act of deception. The weary marine had just been shot in the face and exercised prudence.
Our motto should be that of John O'Neill on the Dick Cavett show. We do not routinely commit atrocities. We will investigate credible charges of war crimes We punish our own soldiers who commit war crimes. Kerry is a turd. Our enemies are evil; we are not.
Well, still, a little more creativity would have been appreciated. Had the Marine simply put pantys on the terrorist thugs head, AND THEN PLUGGED THE SCUM, he could have honestly claimed he was JUST PUTTING THE VERMIN OUT OF HIS MISERY.
