Kerry, Hit From Inside and Out: Marital Strife, Personnel Infighting Battered Campaign
Wash Post ^ | 11/15/04 | Howard Kurtz

Posted on 11/14/2004 8:19:13 PM PST by Cableguy

Teresa Heinz Kerry hardly suffered from a lack of media attention during the presidential campaign.

But if a lengthy, behind-the-scenes Newsweek piece is on the mark, press accounts failed to reflect the degree to which she was a disruptive force in her husband's campaign who often looked "sullen," was deemed a "hypochondriac" by the staff and had a knack for "silencing a cheering crowd."

"On the campaign bus," Newsweek reports, "there had been constant talk of marital spats between the candidate and his wife. . . . Though they kept Teresa's sometimes erratic behavior out of their copy, when they were speaking among themselves . . . the reporters were increasingly vocal in mocking the candidate's wife."

It is difficult for daily journalists covering a candidate to report on the personal travails and staff infighting that envelop most campaigns. Some reporters who traveled with John Kerry said these stories are hard to pin down because campaign officials refused to discuss such details on the record. Others said it was risky to write stories that would alienate not just the candidate but the staffers on whom reporters depend for news.

"There were hints in the daily coverage that Kerry had problems with being decisive and Teresa was not completely helpful," says Evan Thomas, who wrote the Newsweek article. "But I don't think anybody tried to step back and look at the pattern of it. The press has gotten so consumed with the day-to-day that they've forgotten about or become uninterested in the whole Teddy White approach to reconstruction."

I don't recall Democrats mocking Bob Dole's war service

Democrats mock everything. It's ALL they have.

"There were hints in the daily coverage that Kerry had problems with being decisive and Teresa was not completely helpful," says Evan Thomas......the same Evan Thomas who promised that the press so wanted to see Kerry elected that they would get him an extra fifteen points by the postive coverage they gave him during the campaign, and suddenly is finding all this dirt about him and his staff now that the election is over - and I thought that was about as low as a supposed professional journalist could go, until I heard him in an interview last week actually complain with outrage that President Bush liked to "trick" the press at times by letting them run with a untrue story to embarras them: "can you believe it - letting a false story stand like that without correcting it?" - I detest the man and his "Newspeak" rag.....

IF you knew Kerry's history you would know that he tried to get a deferment to study in France. Failing that, he enlisted in the navy, which was not expected to see much action. His first tour he was well off shore. Then he volunteered for swiftboats which had a non-combat mission. That got changed quite unexpectedly on him as he himself admitted. Finding himself in combat, he was a chronic complainer and anti-war officer and immediately requested out the instant his third purple heart allowed it. This after 3 months.

I won't deny he did get shot at, but he certainly never planned on it.

We have some differences about what makes a man a hero.

3 1/2 months in Nam and speeding away from his comrades to avoid what he thought was enemy fire makes him a coward in my book.

To top that off - he opted to leave his crew behind for a pansy job in the states.

Glad you aren't in charge of deciding who our leaders are!!

Look..the second Kerry walked out and said REPORTING FOR DUTY , he was dead..Right , an anti war hippie trying to run as Sgt Rock ..I almost fell off my chair laughing that night watching the Dem convention .What a cornball , transparent move that all was.Did he really think ANYONE bought that act ? He left himself WIDE WIDE open for his war record to be pulled apart.

Nice to hear that journalists were running interference for their candidate of choice. I am damn sure that if Laura Bush had been acting in a manner similar to THK, it would have been front page headline news for weeks at a time.

FOAD presstitutes.

Do you folks realize what they are confessing to here? They KNEW Kerry was a flip flopper and yet they let Kerry go unchallanged when he complained about the "republican attack machine". They would have allowed this country to elect an indecisive President, during war time, just because he pushed their agenda.

They were talking about this on NewsWatch and there all were very passive about it.

The NewsWatch panel said the Kerry thing with McCain was no big deal .. RIGHT! However, had the information regarding McCain being offered 2 positions (VP and SECDEF), been a Bush event .. you can bet your bottom dollar it would have been leaked on purpose.

• Kerry was both "cranky" and more indecisive than he was portrayed by the media. "I couldn't get the man to make decisions," said former campaign manager Jim Jordan. As late as days before the Democratic convention, Kerry was still "dithering" and presiding over endless discussions on whether to abandon public financing for the fall campaign before deciding against private fundraising. Top aides grew so tired of Kerry continuing to seek advice on issues they considered settled that they took away his cell phone.

I looks to me like America really dodged a bullit in this election....

How DARE those Democrats foist this pathetic candidate on this country!!?!!
