I watched the video. There is nothing to even remotely suggest that there was anything even there. The marine appears to fire off a round somewhat aimlessly straight ahead, not down on ground. He wasn't even aiming. Perhaps just a parting shot or something. Watch the video. To me it seems like the words "he's gone" refers to the fact that the insurgent LEFT.

This newspaper is deliberately inciting violence. This can not be tolerated! Whoever is in charge of that newspaper deserves to have his nuts kicked in.

You're right on the money, the Marine didn't take aim at all, his shot was quick and for effect more than anything else. I too thought when the Marine said "he's gone", that he meant the guy got away. There's no way in hades that the shot he fired was aimed at anything in particular.
