TE Lawrence (not a General until after the war?)Whoa! TE Lawrence was a gifted guerilla leader but he never made general. Lieutenant Colonel, I think. He also left the Army, then re-enlisted in the RAF as an aircraft mechanic under an assumed name to escape the fame he had gained in the first war.

I see this old thread has been resurrected. I'm going to throw a name out that may cause you all to groan, but I've been reading about General George Armstrong Custer...yes, I know he was foolhardy and got his troops slaughtered...I wanted to scream while watching Errol Flynn's "They Died With Their Boots On"....but the end result of that lost battle was that the government came in full force and finished the job (not that we agree nowadays with the suppression of the Indians). The anger over Custer's defeat speeded up the opening of the West. Great forces of history in motion and all that.
Nuff said. I'll step aside now.
