The cable television ads, set to begin running Monday, are from a Silicon Valley-based group that wants to amend the U.S. Constitution (search), which limits the presidency to natural U.S. citizens. Those who obtain their citizenship at birth are referred to as natural citizens, while those who become citizens after birth are referred to as naturalized citizens. Schwarzenegger was born in Austria but became a U.S. citizen in 1983.
"You cannot choose the land of your birth. You can choose the land you love," Lissa Morgenthaler-Jones (search) says in the ads.

That's not what I said. The age requirement would remain, but would be joined by a 20 year citizenship requirement.
Explain the how a natural born citizen is better than a citizen such as Arnold, with 20 or more years as a citizen?
me thinks the whole thing is stoopid
I'm with you. Such an amendment only invites trouble.
This story has been posted at least a dozen times in the last few days. Bottomline. The Constitution won't be changed just for Arnold. Ain't gonna happen. The American people will not support such an amendment.
Excellent Point! I myself am waiting for an American Indian that is not beholden to the Democrats.
Bad idea, especially in this time of US borders being overrun by millions of foreigners.
Bull. The Founders knew exactly what they were doing. The Constitution has worked fine for 228 years and counting. We don't need to amend it so some egotisical Austrian citizen and political liberal can screw with the greatest governing document ever produced by mankind.
My gut told me that too. But then on Fox and Friends this a.m. they were talking and that (I cannot think of the anchor's name the blond guy) and one of the other anchors thought it was a good idea. I was shocked.
If this goes through I bet that we would have a Mexican born CIC within 20 years.
Soros would definately run and spend all his $7 BILLION $$$ to get elected.
After 55 million people voted for a 20th Century traitor and was never asked a question about his late 60's and early 70's or middle 80's activities I question your agenda!
I can't imagine having the gall to ask America to amend the constitution for me. What an ego.
Those people are dead. We allow naturalized citizens to vote, run for every other office in the land, and even die, for this country. Why not lead it?
Hasn't an individual who has lived 20 years or more in this country, plus made a name for himself or herself large enough to receive enough attention to even be considered, proven their dedication to this country?
Sure, don't give the same right to everyone stepping off a plan or boat. We current ask for seven years of residency for citizenship...why not say, fine, you live here for 20 years as a citizen, meet the age requirements, and you can run for president.
I've yet to see good arguments against this idea. And please, don't throw out, "The framers of the constitution knew best," because they didn't. Not always. Remember, these are the same framers who allowed for slavery, decided only white men should vote, among other things.
Clearly slavery was wrong, and cleary women and people other than white men deserve to vote. Why not this?
If you are talking about Kerry, then giving Arnold a chance proves my point, not yours.
I don't think that's the problem. I think the problem is that such an amendment would give foreign interests and powers a greater opportunity to exert influence on our political system. The next John Kerry might really BE from France! And I really don't want the liberals here threatening to find a more acceptable, European-born, American citizen to run for the Office of President.
Bull yourself. The framers of the Constitution were all fine men, but they set up a system that support themselves and those like them. Again, remember that much of the original Constitution extended rights essentially only to White Men.
