Maybe we should prevent the people of PR from speaking Spanish, while we're at it.

I'm not an historian on LA, but I seriously doubt Spanish was a 50% language in the 30's and 40's.

Also, when did I say we should "prevent" the speaking of any language?

IMO, llegal immigration is producing separate cultures and multiculturalism is winning.

Whether its good or bad for the country is the debate which should be taking place.

First of all, my opinion on the situation is being extrapolated by my statement of historical fact. I don't like the current immigration situation either but I think it's worse when politicians latch onto for the sake a building a political base (are you listening Congressman Tancredo?).
Just because no one here remembers people in LA or Dallas or Houston or Bugtussle, for that matter, speaking Spanish doesn't mean it wasn't there. I never saw a microbe until I looked through a microscope. They are aware of it now it has been pointed out to them.
What if, after our wars against both Mexico and Canada (as the surrogates of England and France), we rounded up those people who lived there and put them on reservations as we did we the Indians? Most of those of Spanish ancestry assimilated on the outside world and remained true to their roots in their community. Had the American Indian done the same thing, their "situation" may have been quite different.
After taking the long way round, their is a big difference between Spanish speaking people in the United States and the muslim problem in Europe. That was all I was trying to point out.
