He Fights On With Dwindling Supply of Smokes [Marlboro Man]
LA Times ^ | November 12, 2004 | Patrick J. McDonnell

FALLUJAH, Iraq — The Marlboro man was angry: He has a war to fight, and he's running out of smokes.

"If you want to write something," he tells an intruding reporter, "tell Marlboro I'm down to four packs, and I'm here in Fallujah till who knows when. Maybe they can send some. And they can bring down the price a bit."

Those are the unfettered sentiments of Marine Lance Cpl. James Blake Miller, 20, a country boy from Kentucky who has been thrust unwittingly and somewhat unwillingly into the role of poster boy for a war on the other side of the world from his home on the farm.

"I just don't understand what all the fuss is about," Miller drawls on Friday as he crouches -- Marlboro firmly in place -- inside an abandoned building with his platoon mates, preparing to fight insurgents holed up in yet another mosque.

"I was just smokin' a cigarette, and someone takes my picture and it all blows up."

Don't smoke, but agree completely on the affordability index. I used to "run the numbers" for my smoking friends, on how they could buy a house with the proceeds of twenty years of smoking at interest. It didn't seem to help, but pictures of skeletonized sports figures suffering from jaw removal from smokeless, and wasted bodies from cancer, worked, where "running the numbers" didn't.

It definitely looks like Chad, if I recall the pics on his profile page correctly. And considering she's pinging her post to him, I'd say it's a pretty good bet.

"Wonder if Mike Bloomberg would have him arrested for smoking in a NYC bar while he enjoyed a cold long neck?"

Absolutely he would. He's not old enough to legally drink. These men need to have all age related restrictions removed from them.

Did you catch this line in the article:
"The photo seems to have struck a chord, as an image of America striking back at a perceived enemy, or just one young man putting his life on the line halfway across the globe."

Percieved?!

YES! I did a double-take when I read that, and I meant to highlight that sentence in my ping to you. (I must've been too tired and left it off.) Incredible... these "insurgents" (terrorists!) are a "perceived enemy" to them!

I'd trade the entire staff of the LA Times for Charlie Company, 1st Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment.

Same here, rmlew. The LA Times staff aren't fit to wipe the boots of those brave Marines!

I want to send this guy a few cartons of Marlboros. I need to know his mailing address. Will:

Lance Cpl. James Blake Miller
Charlie Company,
1st Battalion,
8th Marine Regiment,
US ARMY, IRAQ

do it?

A carton costs close to $50 here in California. I have found an internet site that has Marlboros for $27 a carton. Can I find them cheaper somewhere else?

Anyone want to join me?

OH THE HORROR! It's not PC to glamorize smoking like that. *GASP* There will be anti-smoking, anti-war demonstrators attacking this kid.

Doesn't he realize what this crap does to your lungs??? He's gonna die from cancer!!
