The US never threatened to destroy religious sites of the USSR.

We did tell the USSR that if they started a nuclear war we would totally retaliate. Mutual Assured Destruction (MAD) was the name of the policy. I do not see that in this case. Perhaps we would do better to say we will OCCUPY their religious sites.

What was said here was that if they nuke us we will destroy their religious sites. That is wrong. It is like them saying if you arrest bin Laden we will destroy the Vatican....it is illogical to make such threats. And such threats did not defeat the USSR or win the Cold War. Reagan and SDI bankrupted the USSR. That is how they were "defeated".

The USSR never declared a holy war against us. When the terrorists use their religion as the basis for their hatred toward us, it is not only acceptable, but desirable to threaten their religous sites.

Besides, if we would have ever had to launch the nukes against the USSR, plenty of religous sites would have been leveled as well.
