A veterans group is looking for a place to plant more than 1,100 white crosses on a visible site in Sonoma County, one for each of the American troops killed in Iraq.
The memorial, known as Arlington West, would serve as a reminder of the "human cost" of the war, say local members of Veterans for Peace, a national organization that claims 4,400 members.
"These are the invisible dead," said Tom Harriman, a Sebastopol attorney, Vietnam War veteran and member of Veterans for Peace Chapter 71 in Sonoma County. "These folks are getting killed and no one wants to acknowledge it."

This event is being staged at Santa Barbara City College TODAY. Any Freepers out there come on by and support our Ventura Chapter. Go to the West Campus "Great Meadow" by the library.
We acknowledge and grieve every American death. We feel for every death incurred by our allies.
We are not the jaded Americans who treated our Vietnam Veterans like crapola when they returned from their "honorable" service abroad.
So, this is nothing but political activism by only 4,400 veterans. The silent majority feel otherwise, but isn't that always the case?
Rabid Dog and others will be there in burkas. Calling all Santa Barbara area Freepers. The event is all day at Santa Barbara City College west campus.
Veterans for Peace, Inc. (VFP) is a non-profit 501(c)(3) educational and humanitarian organization dedicated to the abolishment of war
shove it
"Veterans for Peace"
Of course, their definition of peace is the absense of war. If some people are being exterminated by a police state, too bad. If other nations are planning to attack us, too bad. If other nations are supporting terrorists that want to attack us, too bad.
I got an idea where they can put their white crosses - and they won't have to worry about them being exposed to harmful UV either!
But .. the organization doesn't say the 4400 are "veterans", it just says "members" in the article.
Excellent point!
There should be a class action suit for a few BILLION dollars for the placement of the flag without the express written permission from that soldiers parents or wife that represents that soldier, name on it or not!!
Mrs Shehans' son was a Man in his own right. he was a professional soldier and returned to the military of his own accord to serve his country, he was not drafted nor was he under the age of 21. He fought for his own sense of values, not his mother's.
She is now making a mockery of his life and sacrifice for freedom.
