In 1968 there was a Marine standing in his dress greens at the corner of Katella and St. College in Anaheim, CA. Anyone who has ever been to Disneyland knows the corner.

That evening this Marine was on a weekend liberty on his way to Viet Nam. As he was standing at the corner waiting with others for the traffic signal to change so he could cross the street to go to Disneyland there was an automobile with several people inside. As the car was making a right turn in front of the Marine and other pedestrians, a person in the back seat of the car leaned out and spat at the Marine but because of the Marine's excellent reflexes, he missed the spittle.

I know this story is accurate because I was that Marine.

Happy Birthday to all my fellow Marines alive and passed.

Semper Fi,
Kelly

corner of Katella and St. College in Anaheim, CA

Know that corner well because I have lived it this area my whole life

I remember 68 and what the times were like all to well...

I was 12 at the time and even then was a Conservative and I remember well how the "love children" were

That splitter might well have been my phyco hippie 20 year old cousin... he was just that out there at the time and would be his norm back then(and was the area he ran in)

I was riding with him in a car one night during the same time frame when all he could talk about was getting his guns (he was already well armed for the revolution) and "go kill some pigs" and he was stone cold serious

Funny thing is the same hippie cousin of mine went the typical route, drugs, alcoholic, a little jail time..then when he hit bottom in the mid 70,s went to AA, got born again, became a deacon in his church, got marry had kids built a career...

Now he's a hard core Conservative Republican... and will tell anyone what a useless piece of crap he and his hippie love children friends where at that time

Happy Birthday, bro...

the ONLY reason I wasn't spit on was that we came into Norton AFB in 1970 and were told to change into civvies before we left the base... The protesters were just outside the gates.

I went to Western High School (class of 70). I remember Anaheim in the sixties quite well. Also remember really weird road trip to Petaluma with my Grandmother - all the flower children and hippies hitching rides up the coast... signs they carried: Make love not war. Cops were pigs and yes they did refer to our brave soldiers as babykillers.
I also remember the rebel in class who wouldn't salute the flag and wouldn't leave the room while we did... I guess since then these people have raised kids that became Deaniacs... : )
