Mountain Lion Spotted In Boston-Area Town Joggers Urged To Use Caution

POSTED: 10:44 am EST November 9, 2004 UPDATED: 7:33 pm EST November 9, 2004

ACTON, Mass. -- Acton residents are being warned about a mountain lion on the prowl.

NewsCenter 5's Jack Harper reported that there have been two sightings of a mountain lion, also known as a cougar, in the past week.

"It was scary. It was a growl. It was loud and it was deep. It was what you envision when you hear it -- you just envision this large cat," said Acton resident Colleen DiPietro.

"It sounded like an animal in distress running around our house about three times," said Acton resident Ellen Schemerhorn.

Experts say mountain lions no longer roam the area, but this sighting on Mohawk Street is different -- two police officers saw the cat, too.

"When they got out the cruiser and went to the back, they reported seeing a large animal walk by them. They describe it as a 5- to 6-foot cat, very low to the ground, very muscular with a long tail," said Acton police Lt. Don Palma.

An electric sign has been put up in town to alert residents and pet owners. Police are also urging people who jog at dusk or dawn to use extra caution.

"I wouldn't rule anything out, but it would be my belief if there was a cougar here, it is probably an illegal release. There is an illegal trade of wildlife of what they call 'prestige pets,'" said Tony Wolski, of the environmental police.

If you do come face to face with a mountain lion, experts say you should not run, try to appear as big as possible and make a lot of noise.

In spite of the fact that a one washed ashore out on the Elisbeth Islands a few years back (somebody's pet, they said), and my farmer/naturalist neighbor lost a cow to what she and the vet agreed was a 'big cat' ["how'd it get way up in that tree?"], and my , my wife, and our visitors' encounters [from CO ....they know what one looks like], the official position of our MA officials is that "there ain't no such thing here".

I would not say that they are six feet long though...more like four or five-ish, nose to tail. And they like geese, ducks, and other of my former livestock hobby.

SE MA

Shhhh! If the word gets out, the soccer moms will panic, and the rednecks will be a'blastin'.

Right. So they tell dawn joggers (like me) to "use extra caution". Oh. OK then, if a 5-6 foot long muscular mountain lion gets upset with you, just want is "caution" supposed to do to help? lol.

Ten years ago you could barley see anything alive outside.

The food chain is back.

Now I know what those large foot prints in my yard are from.

Isn't it lovely to live in a gun-free zone like MA?

It's kinda funny you should mention that. If you follow Newton Road (site of the signs) south about two miles, it's the site of an imfamous shoot out a few year back (2000 or so?) Some guy did a pump and bolt in a stolen car at a Mobil station in Littleton, the Littleton PD followed him into Acton. Prep wipes out on a turn and the cop corners him. The Perp gets out and shoots into the cruiser six (!) times missing the cop but putting out all the glass in the cruiser. (Now, remember, Acton is a really boooooring suburb.) The cop manages to get out of the cruiser and subdue the moron. If he had tried that in Texas, any one of next ten passing motorist would have emptied a couple of clips into him.

I hope that they don't kill it. I'm sure that it's confused and just wants to be safe and away from people - let's hope that they can tranquilize it and get it back to where it belongs.

The one time I saw a big cat, was right in the center of our town. It is a small town though

The most important thing is that there is a Global Test. Senator Kerry can meet with Chirac, get permission to act, and then, the Germans, then the Belgiums. There is no need to rush to war with the cougar. We must have a perfect plan for the peace.

here in Liberal MA??? They won't kill it. You can't even kill a bear unless its attacking. They frown on squirrels being killed, about anything really!
