"Would Americans prefer to buy a DVD player for $200 or $70? Or a TV for $200 or $400. "
You can start a great argument with that question....you wanna buy a $70 DVD player every couple of years or do you want to buy a $500 dollar DVD player every 10 years....you buy from Wal-Mart...you'll keep replacing your goods as it breaks every couple of years....if you go to Wal-Mart and buy a cheap Souder entertainemnt center...how long will it last???...you'd better not move it or touch it after you set it up....or it will start falling apart..

It's a matter of economics. I can buy a Gillette Mach-3 razor for $8.00 at Albertson's, or $6 at Wal-Mart. And, I can get groceries there, auto supplies there, garden supplies there...I shop almost nowhere else BUT Wal-Mart for the basics.

You stated "...wanna buy a $70 DVD player every couple of years or do you want to buy a $500 dollar DVD player every 10 years....you buy from Wal-Mart"
Let's assume that you do have to replace a DVD from Walmart every 2.5 years for $70 rather than $500. If you take the difference of $430 and invest in the marekt with a 10% return and replaced the DVD every 2.5 years you would have 4 DVD players (perhaps 3 not working) and $480 in the bank. So if you can buy cheaper products that you want and have more disposable income for things like investments, then yes Wal Mart is good for America.

1) In 10 year we won't be using DVD's. It will be something else. Your $500 will be wasted.
2) If you have kids you could find your $500 DVD stuffed with crackers.
3) I have been very pleased with my $70 DVD for over a year now.

I will take the $70 DVD...
The $500 DVD will be just as obsolete in a few years as the $70 DVD.
The $70 DVD probably has the same guts as the $500 DVD.
Walmart has the same brands and models as you will find in the high price store.
There is a little secret in retailing. You will find a high end Sony in a high price store with one model number, and the exact same model in a discount store, but with a different number. The same goes for catalogs.

My $45 DVD player is lasting longer than the $250 DVD player I had, which broke down right after the warranty expired. It would have cost $180 to have it repaired. No brainer: $45 is easier to throw away than $250.
