My understanding of this has always been that she must somehow appeal to men who like their women to seem like men in drag.

Perhaps.
Considering the vast changes in fashion and style, I can still understand why men thought she was a very attractive woman. And even with the accent, her voice isn't that bad in regular dialog. And the acting wasn't bad for that era either. But they should NEVER have EVER let that woman even TRY to sing.

I think her masculine-sounding monotone is part of the turn-on for some people. She was a good actress in "Judgement at Nuremberg" and "Witness for the Prosecution". But she just doesn't flip my switch. In "The Wonderful, Horrible Life of Leni Riefenstahl", it was stated that Riefenstahl as a young actress had been jealous of Marlene Dietrich's success and her director told her that she would also become a big star but in a different way. The young Riefenstahl much more attractive IMHO.
