Also keep in mind, that there was a HUGE unknown out there, how much each national party would muster its base, and how certain of the minority votes broke toward each candidate. Nobody (at least, not Democrats) expected the surprisingly high Latino vote for Bush, which may have just made the difference in several states (Arizona, New Mexico, and surprisingly, Iowa), and elected two Senators of Hispanic origin (Salazar, Democrat, in Colorado, and Martinez, Republican, in Florida).
