You have a point there. It still holds true, however, that it doesn't matter if you have the "right" position on any issue if you can't get elected. If he's going to be a roving candidate, he might do better in a deep South state, where both whites and blacks are more socially conservative. But then, he's Catholic, which may go against him even more than being black.

Unfortunately, our most successful "Republicans" are all "former Democrats" so it's doubtful he'd be as popular with the party bosses as he would be with the people.
Well, laying aside the "can't" get elected and refering to those who don't hold office - does Rush do no good? Sean Hannity? Bill Bennett? Jack Kemp? Newt Gingrich? None of the intellectuals and "idea men" in the GOP do any good because they don't currently hold office?
There's more than one way to affect change in this country.
