Can't be a socially liberal Republican after the '04 result. The losers in this election are Rudy (even though he campaigned well for Bush), Pataki and John McCain.
A social conservative will win and my first pick is Rick Santorum. If GW Bush has an unbelieveable 4 years I think Jeb would be a great pick. I know that is a lot of Bush's but his popularity in Florida and his mastery of the Spanish language is big. He is also very conservative and a very likeable person who is good at getting his point across.

Jeb is actually more conservative than Dubya, methinks. However, America won't be ready for another Bush that soon.

No congressman or senator need apply; POTUS is the quintessential
executive position.
If you restrict your view to governors, the cream of the crop is someone who has announced that he will not run for POTUS in '08 - Jeb Bush. That leaves three choices wrt Jeb:
- Take his word as final,
- Run him as VP to keep him in the public eye for the future, or
- Lay the groundwork for a "Draft Jeb" campaign.
I hope some consideration will be given to running favorite son candidates in the several states to prevent the primaries from producing a majority candidate. At which point Jeb would become a natural choice for the convention.
