He has called this ``Liberty's Century'' and by its name, President George W. Bush laid out this nation's mission, a mission now solidly embraced by the American people.
It wasn't, certainly, the challenge this 43rd president had in mind when he stood on the Capitol steps in January 2001. But it was one he accepted unflinchingly as his - and this nation's - obligation to the nearly 3,000 people who died on Sept. 11, and to every American child who deserves to live in a secure and peaceful world.
One day those children and the children who will come after them will visit the bustling site of Freedom Tower in New York City, gaze at its 9/11 memorial and learn of countless acts of heroism and heartrending tragedy.
And we believe they will be inspired by the courage and determination of a president who led a people to face the depths of evil yet keep faith in the essential goodness of this country and in the power of freedom.
Vice President Dick Cheney introduced President Bush [related, bio] yesterday at a victory rally by saying, ``If ever a man met his moment as leader of this country, that man is George W. Bush.''
With Tuesday's conclusive margin of victory, the American people met theirs as well.
New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman recently reminded his readers that this nation ought not be defined by 9/11, but by the Fourth of July.
Friedman's error was his belief that this president, or any American, would ever confuse the two.
The attacks of 9/11 only underscored for Bush and for all of us that for July 4th to have meaning, we must live free from fear. And that freedom can only be secured by offering the hope of liberty to those denied it around the world.
``Our nation has defended itself and served the freedom of all mankind,'' Bush said yesterday. ``Because we have done the hard work, we are entering a season of hope.''
And it is, after all, hope that brings people to the polls - here in the libraries and town halls and community centers of New England, and at polling places in the cities and countryside of Afghanistan and, soon, Iraq.
In thanking supporters from his home state of Texas, President Bush described the essential American character ``as hopeful as the break of day.''
Who can doubt that we have re-elected a president who embodies that character?
Hope was on the way after all.

I just realized that GWB actually does have a vision: that of spreading liberty. When he talks about how freedom will drive out terrorism, and that we as Americans want freedom for all the world, he isn't spouting cliches. He REALLY MEANS IT.

Yep. He's the genuine article. It cracks me up that lefties were so comfortable with a President who defiled the office versus a President who reads the Bible and loves his wife. They don't believe in freedom. Only in freedom from God and decency. Inside the chest of the liberal, beats the little twisted heart of a tyrant. Screw 'em!
I saw Harold Ickes on the tube saying Bush didn't have a mandate. What a dolt..

Yes, it was fun watching all the pundits squirming yesterday as the word "mandate" was brought up. According to them, since the Dem's lost seats in the Senate, including the Minority Leader, a feat that hasn't been accomplished since the mid 1930s, they are a powerful group who will make things difficult for the GOP. Maybe in TV Land. In real life the judicial fillibuster is dead.
Yeah, but Clinton had a mandate by getting a whopping 43% of the vote.
Bush is the first president since FDR in 1936 to win re-election and increase his party's hold on the House and Senate. That's pretty historic, and it sounds like a mandate to me.
My precinct went for Kerry by about 75%. Yikes!
All you dems and MSM out there who see this you need to learn one thing...You can not expect to change people's hearts by lying, deceiving, forcefully shoving secularism upon society.
America is an IDEA and that IDEA demands Responsibility, Accountability, Truthfulness, Morality, and Intergrity. You people better think about what Michael Moore and a bunch of arrogant state judges will cost you, because you will be paying for a long time for your arrogant, hateful seething lying even after Bush completes his second term!

I loved Mark Levine's line to Hannity yesterday, after Hannity was agreeing with the prez about reaching across the isle to the Dems to work together. Levine said something like..."Yeah, I'd like to reach across the isle too, to SLAP a few of them!" Hehehe.....
For the record, I've been here for years, I voted for Bush and I object to the term "mandate". I would REGARDLESS of which side won with 51% of the popular vote. 70% is definitely a mandate, 60% probably, 51% - no, sorry, that's not.
There is still 49% of the country out there, barely under half, which wanted to fire the President. Not to mention those 40% or so of the eligible population that didn't bother to vote at all.
If the Dems had fielded a less obnoxious candidate or relied less heavily on the Hollywood set, it could have gone the other direction. We risk getting overconfident by considering a 1% majority a "mandate". Call me a pesssimist but I consider the 1% not a mandate, but a signal that we've got a lot more work to do.
