---I don't know what form a progressive rebirth is going to have to take in this country, but I think the Democratic Party will be long gone by the time it happens.
The majority of the American people are like alcoholics or crack addicts, hooked on a simplistic ideology that makes them feel like God's annointed rulers of the world. As with any addiction, the addict will cling to it, and refuse to accept any rational evidence that shows how destructive it is to them. Given the choice between a real life and the addiction, the latter will win every time.
The cycle will not end until the addict has hit rock bottom, and has nowhere else to go.
So it is with America. However much of a mess Bush has made of this country, it isn't enough for the American voter to see the light and abandon their addiction. There's a lot further to fall yet -- and it will likely be painful for all of us. Plus, not all addicts make it back from rock bottom. But, until that stage is reached, any attempt we may make to turn the country back from its addiction -- whether by finding charismatic new candidates, developing effective programs, turning back to our roots or moving to the center -- will likely fall every bit as far short as we did this year.---
