Marker lights on vessels are burning constantly, so it would be hard to use them as a trigger. Signals for bridge lifts include radio calls or horn blasts, and some channel markers flash at timed intervals for identification.
In Boston - a very eastern area in the US - the LNG tankers come right into the harbor and up river to Chelsea. They go past the Boston financial district, the Fidelity trading installation, Old Ironsides and the condominiums where the Boston Bin Ladins lived. It's been estimated that if one of them was hit that the entire downtown Boston area would be destroyed as well as Logan Airport and beyond. IIRC the area destroyed would be at least 5 miles in diameter. Every time they bring one of those ships in (about once a week) there is high security. Most of the LNG depot locations are in less populated areas. Does anyone know if Houston has LNG tankers?
